What's up with my WBS?

OK, So I've tried inoculating 3 bags of wbs, but to no avail. I've been growing shrooms for several years, but never using WBS. My temps are constant and I inoculated each bag with 2 full syringes. I've never had problems before, so I am completely stumped. Anyone have this problem? Is it possible that my WBS contains some form of fungicide that isn't noted on the bag? My current bag I soaked for 30 hours, so my moisture should be ok, and even if it wasn't growth should be slow, not completely absent, right?!

No prob. I actually soaked my grain for 30 hours, then PC'd in oven-safe bags for 1 hour and 45 minues at 15 psi. I inoculated the next day after the bag was completely cooled. I thought I may have killed my spores so I actually re-inoculated a few days ago, another full syringe. I know it isn't contamed because it smells fine and there is absolutely NO growth. Temps are a constant 28 C, with medical tape filter patches on the bag. I have always been able to figure most problems out, but this one has me seriously stumped. It has been about 3 weeks, with nothing to show. My last 2 bags were the same....left for about a month before they got hit with some funky smelling contams.

I pc so long because my bags are pretty big, and to get those middles sterilized I figured it would need the extra time. The grain appears fine, and is fairly squishy to the touch. After soaking I rinsed twice.

that's an awful lot of free water loose in there, combine that with starch [burst kernels] and wet spot won't be far behind. sometimes more is not better, try it with ~5 cc max per bag.

Even with a big wet spot or extreme overwatering wouldn't you think you would still see some growth, hippie? I actually inoculated the bag in different spots, 2CC's in 5 spots basically, covering each hole with 2 layers of medical tape. These are pretty big bags, but I never did consider wet spots. Does the starch in the WBS have a tendency to really clump? The seed isn't very sticky, should the kernels actually by burst?

Check your WBs bag, did it have a fungicide in it, if it did (and some WBS does) you are fucksered.

This would explain no growth AND no contams, no fungus that you want or not can grow in fungicided birdseed.

No need for such long soak times. I steam my WBS for an hour and it's ready for PC'ing.

Either way, moisture can't be THAT far off to not have ANY growth. Did you knead the bag after injecting it to mix the spores around?
I caught the part where you said 'I thought I may have killed my spores'. So you're not telling us the full story.
Either your bag was too hot when you injected it, or it's too hot now, or their is something in your WBS inhibiting growth, or your syringes are lamed(perhaps laying out in the sunlight or something).

Did you rinse the grains after soaking them? Even if they didn't have fungicides, most WBS is fairly starchy after a soaking/simmering.

Ya, I rinsed twice after the soak. I really don't think I killed my spores on my first injection as the bags seemed to be completely cooled...left for almost 24 hours. Regardless, I reinoculated a week later with another syringe. I have read the bag like 10 times, nothing stating fungicide was used, but I am beginning to think that HAS to be it. I keep all my syringes in the fridge, letting them warm to room temp. for a couple hours before using them. I have done hundreds of jars and tonnes of bags using popcorn with no major problems. WBS is just so cheap and available I'd prefer using it. I've never had a bag do NOTHING, was just wondering if this was common with WBS.

Your pressure cooker times seem a little bit long to me. I never do mine for any more than an hour and see very little if any busted grains. That leads me to the next question, with that long of soak and PC times, I would imagine that you have alot of busted grains (looks kinda like mashed potatoes) If this is the case maybe this is to blame. Also Ive found that if you shake the jars/bags hot when they first come out of the PC, it makes them more evenly hydrated as some moisture is going to evaporate while PCing. One time I forgot to shake and 4 out of 14 jars stopped halfway through, and the rest went slowly (2+ weeks for g2g) Just my 2 cents, any one else have anything to add?

I'd say do it in quart jars instead of bags just to make it easier, or until you figure out what the problem was. I'd also follw a WBS tek word for word so you know you aren't screwing up somewhere along the way.

Thanks guys. lots of good feedback here. There are actually little to no burst grain, and no water in the bag. Honestly, if anything it looks dry to me. The grain is dark in colour, and soft, so I figured the moisture content was money. Maybe I will try jars...I just wanted to do bags so I could shake it up easier. It really has me puzzled that there is absolutely no growth though, even when I've really screwed up in the past I've had at least some growth.
