Getting a landowners permission

My wife and I were left a large track of land in Central Texas, and I have grown up in the company of mostly ranchers and farmers so I thought I might comment on "our" perspective of gathering and tresspassing. We happen to have a very popular river running through our place, so every weekend we get your above average idiots , getting hammered and cutting our fences, then driving their oil leaking trucks through the rivers until they find a deep spot, then they drive up the banks and tear down more fence or gates until they find their way out. Next morning the cattle are out, the Sherrif is calling, and we have $400.00 fencing bill. Over the summer this happens 3 times a month. During hunting season we lease, or sell the rights, to hunt deer on the property. During that season we spend our time chasing road hunters and those who shoot our cattle, for fun. A good cow is about $2400.00. So you can imagine that most aren't happy to see someone walking through their field, uninvited. Having said all that, we have never turned away anyone who has asked to see the property or use the river for whatever reason. Futhermore, good conversation between ranchers often includes stories about those who we let run around and what they are doing....The hardest part is actually making contact, then having some reason..My suggestion would be on a weekend find the areas you want to hunt and be waiting at the gate. Someone will show up. A big friendly hello and "I hope I'm not bothering you" will go along way. Before we became land owners I used my camera as a free pass to nearly every ranch I wanted access to. Just tell them you were hoping to take some pictures with your new camera. Offer to leave the car behind and walk around. It will work, then you have no worries. Or you need some cow chips for your garden, an oldie but goodie....Have a sack and a shovel. Find your rural feed store, most have a bulletin board offering services like animal boarding and fencing. Call those guys and ask if you can get manure or take pictures, hugg trees, whatever, most will be very accomidating. Everyone has no tresspassing signs up. Don't think that makes them mean, it's for when you get the fence cutters and cow shooters, you have more of a case with the sherrif, they are required if you want to prosecute. Texas law states that if you have done no damage and are not carrying a weapon, the land owner can ONLY ask you to leave, if your caught tresspassing. If you refuse THEN he can call the Sherrif, and have you ticketed. The second offense is a small ticket, unless you do damage or have a weapon. Good Lu

I used to know a large dairy rancher near the Oregon border, and he used to chase me off until we became friends. Now I can go out there any time, but he once told me that his reason for chasing people off wasn't because of them 'silly cybes' as he called it, it's because some people bring beer cans and bottles out there and it messes up up the cows. There's always a few in the crowd to mess it up for everybody else :P

hey douchebag, nice to have you here at the shroomery.
..those fences just never seem to keep people out. especially when there's mushrooms in there
the mushrooms sometimes don't attract the brightest or most courtious of people, but that's all just part of the game of owning a "Shroom-Field"
anyways, welcome to the hunting forum. hope you stick around.

yeah ive been in Shroom-fields all throughout the state of Florida..
some of the farmers are strict about trespassers.
you have to be ballsy when approached. let them know "i'm here for the Mushrooms".
for me it is always a good thing to be able to chat with the farmer, it lets you know how cool or uncool they will be about you being there.
on several occassions i have said this: "look i am not here to mess with your cows or litter or do anything but pick and photograph Mushrooms. there are Mushrooms on your field here, so it doesnt matter if you want me here or not, i will still come. If you dont want me here i will still come and i will come at night if that is what it takes."
not to be a dick about it, it's just that if there are Mushrooms on that property chances are i will be hoping the fence to come and get them.
then again i have been in some great fields hundreds of times without ever seeing a farmer.
if it is a great shroom field i will be there.

Last time i ran from a farmer i was sprinting and he had the truck... as i ran through the back pasture i spotted a cube cluster, slid to a stop literally landing on my hands, picked the lil babies and then proceeded to run.
ooh the stories!

now that's dedication to your passion, in Texas your ass would have been full of cactus....I can't get that visual out of my head! Some guy running across a field, slides for no apparent reason to the farmer, while being chased by said farmer in a truck...Man we gotta go bowling....
