Coffee Question. . .

So uh... heres the deal. About 6 months ago now, I made a batch of 10 half pints WBS, soaking the WBS in coffee as per all the usual stuff talked about here and elsewhere in the community. Some things came up, and I didnt get to inoculate that particular batch. So fastfoward till about a month ago. I found the old coffee jars, just setting there asking to be hit up with some spores(eqs, my fav ) so working around the dry substrate problem by spreading the spores from one single syringe into 4 syringes just to add extra water to the jars, I knocked em up. It wasnt quite enough, and most of the jars stalled at around 70% because of the overly dry substrate, one is at 95% right now, and one had been setting at 100% surface colonization for about a week. Not having any containers to case in atm, I decided to birth the 1 jar that was 100% and see what I could get from it as a cake(I know grains dont preform well as cakes, but I also know coffee is supposed to help with fruiting, and all I really wanted from the beggining was to see the results of coffee)
Anyway, as I birthed the cake, I almost threw it into the trash right then because it had an "off" smell. Im pretty sure right now, that its just the coffee because I had a vermiculite bowl on top of the jar that had some decent growth in it, and it smelled of 100% pure mushroom goodness So my question is, do coffee grains really have an "off" smell, because the smell isnt bad at all(I actually found myself smelling the smell for a solid minute or so because it didnt smell bad, just a tad bit off) or should I just scrap the bastard and be done with it?
Anyone who has experience with coffee, plz post if you have had a similar result.

They have been sitting around for too long. I tried that with WBS and i lost about 40pints. startover, making sure you have time to complete the process. also, only use coffee water on a few of your jars(so if it fails you dont loose your whole crop)

Mine smelt like WBS mixed with a slight coffee smell...
When the coffee project was first coming up I gave it a try to see the results myself. Never turned out anything like RR, but it was an experiment I enjoyed trying out.
They never smelt off tho...

Well, as I said I would have chunked the cake right when I birthed it, but then as I was smelling it I remembered the coffee might have that effect, also as you said, it smells like coffee mixed with grains so I think Im good.
On another note, I would like to ask mushboy how in the world you lost 40 pint jars just to letting them set around... Did you fuck your sterile work? did you mess with them any at all before innoculating? Was it actual contamination, or just being dry, and never making it... all the growth I see is 100% healthy looking, and I even know why my jars stalled. Ive left jars of grains around for months before, and NEVER had any problems, I still dont think this is contamination...
just wondering
