i just finished sterilizing my substrate and innoculating and i read that you should not let your jars sit flat on the pan if boiling because it drys out your substrate. i have one cake left that i didnt inject anything into and i opened it up and its not very wet. did i screw up and if so can i fix it? also what do i cover the holes with while waiting for my fuzz to grow?

yes you can rehydrate jars that are too dry. do so by taking a sterile syringe and filling it up with distilled water. inject the desired amount to achive proper moisture content.
aslo have patientce, keep jars in a dark environment at about 83-86 degrees F. brf jars usually take at least 2 weeks to colonize... check the jars a week in to make sure there is no contams. otherwise forget about them for 2 or 3 weeks. hope this helps

thank you that does. im curious if theres a way to know if theyre to dry? i had an extra cake left over and i opened it up and the top 1/2 inch of course was dry and under that it was a tad moist and would clump together if i squeezed.
**edit** is there a time when the growth will visually represent if the moisture content is right or not? or should i just go ahead and inject some distilled water in it to be safe?

If you inject water, make sure you don't put to much...
You don't want standing water on the bottom of your jars. With wbs, it makes them rot, with pf cakes, ugh...lol
Godd luck tho

It definitely sounds like you need to read some more. I wouldnt recommend that a person new to this try to inject water into jars that seem dry. I also suggest buying a cheap pressure cooker (less than $20 at wal-mart). Read a whole lot more about the pf-tek and cakes. Personally, I think cakes are a waste of time but, yes, i too started with this technique because I heard it was what beginners should try. The jar holes should be covered with something like tyvek, polyfil, or some microspore tape.

if you followed the instructions for the pf tek the jars should have just the right moisture content... but if you opened the jar and messed around with it to see if it was wet enough, i'd scrap it and do some more reading
