Frusterated and seeking advice from others
    #546112 - 02/09/02 08:37 PM (22 years, 11 months ago)

My frist time I used brown rice flour cakes. They all did well, I kept them clean and everything sterilized. Now I've continued only now I've also have a Pressure Cooker and I'm using birdseed. I've kept everything clean, sterilized everything, pressured cooked what was needed, left it in the sterilized pot till I moved the jars to a sterilized 80f terrirum. I've kept everything much more clean and together than my first grow, only this time I've lost and or losing all of my jars too green mold or something unidentifiable that might be cob web mold. I do not know what I'm doing wrong. I'd like to know if anyone has any tips or words of advice to give me I could sure use the help, its been quite depressing to keep loosing things to mold when im doing everything by the book.

Where do the contams originate from? Do they seem to spread from the innoculation points?

When using bird seed it's a good precaution to soak the bird seed for twenty-four hours. Apparently some organisms will "hatch" and will be easier to kill in the pressure cooker. Sorry to hear you are having problems

Look to see if contams are in specific area, where spores were innoculatred. If the contams. appear only in line with where the innoc. holes are, then you know its from the syringe. If yoiu made the syringe yourself, that must be considered as a contamination source. The syringe could have touched something accidently between innoculations. Did you flame the syringe? The grain could also be the culprit, as mentioned too. Try not to get too frustrated. Make a "control group" set of pf jars next time with a good syringe. If its your first time with a new pc and a new substrate, that alone introduce (2) new factors. unless i misunderstood....?

Yes, I did use a spore print, and the contamination seems to start from the bottem and work its way up, not from the innoculation point. I did soak the bird seed for 24 hours before using them, and pressured cooked them at 15psi for an hour. I also have four PF jars that used the same spore print and they are not showing any sign of contamination. Could this problem just be from the air in the room? Would a Hepa Filter be the best thing to try first?

no, you need to steep your bird seed for 45 minutes then let it sit in the water for at least 24 hours prior to PCing to let any organisms hatch... thats why the rice cakes are ok and the seeds arent... and thats why its not near innoc points...

That happened to me as well.

In my case however, I did 32 pint jars. Lost all of the jars done with one strain, but none of the jars done with another strain. I had made the spore prints for both.

So it would appear to be caused by the print. Since I used the same method to prepare both types of prints, I'm not sure where I went wrong. Just about brought me to tears though. 16 contaminated jars is a tough blow.

So, it could have been a number of things. The only way to troubleshoot is to just start eliminating the possible contam points. Here’s what I would check:

1: search for the pressure cooker teks. There is a trick where you let steam out for 10 minutes to eliminate air gaps. Also, I do jars for 90 minutes and bags or large gallon jars for 2 hours. 1 hour may not be enough time.

2: you said you used a spore print I think? Can you elaborate on that part of your process?
