Noodle cakes?
    #5460870 - 03/30/06 05:41 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

While cooking some mac'n'cheese, and just after reading http://forums.mycotopia.net/showthread.php?t=8287 (on whole rice substrate) I thought to myself; could you cook noodles, rinse and dry them, and loosely pack jars 1/2" from the top, add vermiculite, and put in PC and eventually, case them? I think the Mac'n'cheese style noodles would work great. They allow for good airflow.

I would think that the noodles would rot. Not sure though.

i think this might work actually. i wouldn't use mac n cheese noodles... inexpensive overprocessed food is pretty much nutritionally barren. even if it grew on them you might be in for an unpleasant surprise with the potency like people who have used instant rice have found out.

it just might work if you use a whole grain pasta. they got a chewier texture so it won't be a soggy mess in your jar and just might have the nutes needed to produce a healthy crop. i dont expect it would work better than any of the "normal" substrates but its an idea for somebody in a pinch or somebody that wants to experiment..

Ive tried this a few different ways, and none of them worked.

I used pasta rings. boiled and unboiled, and with different amounts of water in the jars when pc'ing...

At first, the unboiled rings (with a half cup of water in the jars when pc'ing) started to show some white myc looking growth- but it was actually mold.

I wouldnt think that you would need to boil the noodles fist, as they would cook when you pressure cook if you have water in the jars...

i'd think boiling them first and draining well would work best not only for a consistent moisture content without any excess, but then you could also put a dry verm layer on the top like a pf jar like originally mentioned...

sorry to hear your experiments failed because it would be a neat idea for a quick and dirty alternative but it could have a lot to do with the nutrition of the pasta you used (like i said the whole grain stuff just might do it, doubtful regular white pasta is going to work well or at all)

It was just a bored experiment... i tried a few other things as well, but nothing panned out enough to do again.
