Is my local weather's humidity really that off?
    #5460553 - 03/30/06 04:41 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

The site reads our town's humidity at 86% but my cigar perfect hygrometer (just salt calibrated, it was dead on anyways) reads it at 50-51, and it fluctuates just a tad. Who's off here? It's range is 50-90

Now it's reading 46. Anyone know what's up?

Eh, I guess like with rain (and the temperature most of the time) the weather media is off.

The relative humidity can differ from your frontyard to backyard.

Humidors are always off, they're just cheap hygrometers is all.

I'm willing to put out a good amount of money to have an accurate hyrometer/thermometer if you have one to suggest. A wide rH range would be nice.

Taylor 1458. More hygrometer than you'll ever need, mostly due to that fact that you get 2, and it's expandable. It's also wireless.
Only 40 bux.

http://www.comforthouse.com/thermometer1.html

The cheaper 1459 unit you see lower on that page is a remote unit you can use to expand the 1458.

Just buy the 1458.

20-99%.

That one on Ebay is not the 1458 home unit. It is the 1459 remote unit, like Cappa just mentioned. The 1458 comes with one remote 1459, and you can optionally buy more remote units.

The reason the Taylor will last is that only the remote unit is subjected to high humidity. The electronics in the remote are conformally coated to protect against moisture. The home unit, however, is not protected and will crap out quickly in a high humidity situation. Remote type units from Oregon Scientific, and other manufacturers can also be used in high humidity if designed for outdoor use. Cheap digitals and the home units designed for indoor use should not be put in moist conditions.

If you want cheap and reliable, take a $5 digital hygrometer, open it up, and extend the sensor with a short wire. Then the unit can be kept dry while the sensor is inserted in the FC.
