Brown Rice Flour, Verimiculite, and Psilocybe B+
    #5459168 - 03/30/06 11:33 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I'm using the method found http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/3372/pag/1 for growing. Its been almost two weeks and I noticed no colonization. Curiosity got the best of me. I got one jar and I opened it up and tore apart the substrate. No mycelium. I then noticed when taking a second appearance at my jars that I actually had some mycelium in it. Very little but some. I need to mention that my first jar was packed TIGHTLY, I think it was packed way too tightly if that is possible. So anyhow, this second jar that had the mycelium growing. I shook it up to loosen up the substrate. After doing this I couldn't see the mycelium anymore. Did I kill it? I just figured if I loosened things up a bit that it might grow faster. I still have 3 more jars that I haven't tampered with, but there is no visible growth in those. Am I supposed to get the whole 2/3 cup vermiculite and 1/4 cup brown rice flour in one jar? Thats an awful lot of packing to fit it in a 1/2 pint jar.

Thanks for the help. Sorry if it seemed like I was rambling.

If your using BRF do *not* pack it intto your jars. You want it as loose as possible.

yeah. thats the same tek i use. i think the measurements it says to use is enough for about 1 and a half jars. don't really worry about it though. i still use the same ratio, fill it up as loosely as possible, and then theres some left over. but at least i know i got the ratio right.

You should never pack the substrate.
Did you shake the syringe before inoculation? Did you make sure to inoculate the substrate and not the vermiculite layer?
Are the jars sealed? They shouldn't be. What's the temperature? It should be around 80?F.

I packed almost the whole ratio into the jar. What I want to know is that if I shook up one of my jars to break up the substrate and make it looser, did I kill the mycelium that was forming?

You shouldn't shake BRF either, you only shake WBS or popcorn. You probably just let in a whole gaggle of contams

I'll let it sit and grow to see what happens. If my mycelium stays white as snow I'm going to take a good assumption that its not contaminated. But.................. if it is, I'll toss it out. So I didn't hurt the mycelium (if it didn't get contaminated)?
