Smily names/codes?
    #5459043 - 03/30/06 10:51 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Before some upgrades, when you mouse over'd a smiley, it would show you its name.  This was a cool feature.

Ever since the smily section expanded like a balloon on crack, i've been more and more hesitant to open the smily page to look up one little dude i wanted to find.

I'm wondering if there's a way to make it so that the smilies would display their :smilycode: when hovered over. They used to do this before.
It makes learning them a lot quicker and easier.

I've had a hard time finding the names to some of them in the past as well.

What I started doing was checking the image properties, which will show the actual link and file name. In IE if you right click and go to properties it will bring this dialog box up.

I find that with all of them I've checked like that so far, the file name was the same as the code to get it to display. This is the fastest way I've found of getting the name.

Its not like that.  I'd like it if they all had the code displayed when hovered over. Just makes learning them easier.

It would be cool to have the hover message back again.

Could a mod at least give me a response?  Even a 'No' would be better than no reply.    :geordinod:

You want an admin.

Basically, you want the html for the smileys to have alt tags

Code:
<img src="angry.gif" alt="Angry" />

am I right?

Yes yes.  This feature was actualy around before, I'm not sure why it got taken out.  Maybe when the new upgrades/smileys showed up.

It would be a great little feature to add back in tho!

You can still get the alt pop-up tag on the post page's instant smileys and expanded smiley panel screens. To have them listed in the posts themselves is a little unecessary imo - not to mention, that's not my area of management. Furthermore, Y has his hands quite full with integration of a new content management system for what is arguably the most important part of the site (that which draws the most first-time users): our front-end static information database.

Unecessary?  It was like that before dude. heh.  With the new expanded simlie collection, it would actualy be 10x more usefull than before.  For the record tho, im not asking to change any of the smilie setups, or panel setups...only that the alt tags show when hovered over.

I actualy cannot get the alt tags even in the smiley panel.  Maybe this is a Firefox issue?

Anyway, if Ythan is busy coding stuff with higher priority I wont be a bother.  I just hope this can be put on the 'stuff to do' list or something, when things are back to normal and chilled out.

Thanks for the response Geo.
:sun:

Edit:  It seems there's an ALT tag 'problem' to begin with, concerning Firefox.  Here's a link for future reference:

If it's a question of manually entering the alt values into a database, I'm sure that the adminship could farm out the grunt work to volunteers

you wouldn't have to give any kind of access privileges, people could work on an offline local copy

I for one would be happy to donate some time
