What do you think?

I'm not really sure which thread to put this in, but here, whith philosphy and such, seems as good a place as any.
I recently sent an email to my friends with the following quote:
No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the sources of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power. --P. J. O'Rourke
After I sent this, all hell broke loose with people being mean and disrespectful and well...human. So I though...would anyone here have any opinions on this statement?

after you sent it where? as for the quote it seems obvious enough. drugs don't stand up, walk around and kill people on their own, it takes someone to act upon them.

Are you serious? You could show an 8 year old that quote and I'm sure they'd agree with it.
If you feed a rock LSD the rock isn't going to think it can fly and hurl itself at your face. Though if you feed yourself LSD then give some to a rock it may appear that way!

You dont change somthing by attacking the current model. To really change somthing, you create a better model, that makes the old one obsolete.
Testing for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power is pointless in my opinion. Those are just symptoms of a MUCH deeper issue.

Oh yeah, amen. The only way to treat those diseases it to find their cause. And the cause is more human and simple then we would expect. Most peole do bad things or send bad thoughts let's say because of fear. Fear of pain for example. Because they don't want to show their weaknesses and to seem vulnerable. Fear is one of our greatest enemies, and it's ancestral. And if we could find a way to deal with our fears we would be getting somewhere.

I'd say that the deeper issue is wounds that the person exhibiting these traits is holding within themselves (becoming fear, and acted out in the above symptoms), and the lack of a teaching role model.
