Agricultural Limestone
    #5458652 - 03/30/06 09:00 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I just bought a bag of this from the feed store, I asked for crushed limestone flour and this is what I got. I think this may be the wrong kind because it says calcitic/dolomatic on the bag and Ive read that dolomite lime is bad as a casing buffer. The chem analysis is as follows:

CaCO3 75%
Ca 30%
MgCO3 12%
Mg 3%

CaC03 Equivalence 95%

Any one know if this will work or should I just use it for my plants (it was only $3 for 50lbs)

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Their have been alot of posts regarding hwo bad magnessium is for shrooms.

Use it for your plants, that's way too much for shrooms according to the old hands.

It works fine if it's a powdery product and not peletized. If it's in powder form, mix your casing material along with the lime at a starting rate of 1/2cup of lime to 2 gallons of moistened peat moss or coir. Just enough water in the container so you can mix the contents easily and well. Mix well, cover the container and allow it to sit for a 4-5 hours. Then check the PH balance. Add accordingly to achieve 7.2-8 on the scale.

Yes, please use it and give us a report. The accepted story is Mg needs to be less than 5%. It would be nice to know it that is true or not. As long as it's ground to a flour, it should balance the ph. Use a bit of gypsum along with it.

It would be worth a test, I wouldn't use it on a large grow though.

When I first went to the farm supply and requested limestone, that's what they gave me. I went back and asked for calcium carbonate, they had that too. It's labled as High Calcium Lime, the total Mg content is 1.54%

The Magnesium Carbonate (MgCO3) is a bit high with your product. With this product, the %'s are in the safe zone and I know it works. You may want to reconsider or use on a small project as mentioned. Sorry. I missed that.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'm going to try it with a small trial first, but since it has less than 5% Mg I bet it just might work. Its the Magnesium Carbonate that I'm a little worried about. But Ill keep every one posted we'll know for sure in maybe a week or 2.

mm, I didnt ask around before I do it, but this is what I got

Agricultural Limestone
Ca -- 21%
Mg -- 13%
CaCO3 -- 53%
MgCO3 -- 45%

CaCO3 -- 109.03

Mg is way over 5% ... but I had no idea before I used it with peat/verm as casing. Got overlay bad, scrap and recased, now its in fc for about 3 days.
Hopefully .. hopefully

That fact you said it overlayed seems promising, because
from what I understood with that much Mg the myc. wouldn't even colonize that casing layer. So it seems from your post that while it wasn't optimal we might not need to worry about Mg as much as we formally thought? Did the myc. look healthy when it colonized or did it look shriveled/deformed/otherwise unhealthy?

I've seen a report of a grower using lime with an elemental Mg. % of 27 for P. Cubensis. His grows were very nice.

Oooops. 20%
