hi
recently i had an idea about this. theese pi?e filters are cheap, well designed for the purpose.(just drill a hole on the top of the jars ad stick it in) they have active carbon inside.

like theese
altough i am not sure that they are capable of filtering the airborne spores/bacteria from the returning air of the cooling jars.but its worth a try..in my experience tyvek can fail too.
what do you think?
peace, milan

Marginal at best, since smoke particles are usually smaller, but on the same order of magnitude in size as contams. If it can't filter all of the smoke, I wouldn't trust it to filter contams, either. But, since contams aren't being actively sucked through the filter, like smoke would be, it could possibly filter well enough to do the job. It would take laboratory testing to definitively answer that question.

i think it wouldnt work, also why mess with something like that if u can simply screw your lid on a piece of tyvek .. cant get simpler than that.

mogur:air is moving much slower in a jar, than it would in a pipe.also you are right, it wouldnt work all the time for sure.
ohmatic: propably in your country tyvek is a common thing, in my country its very hard to find it, and if you can its very expensive and you can buy only in real big quantities. ok i could buy fairly cheap some tyvek clothing but thoose arent 100% contam free eighter. if this pipe filter would work, it would be good for lots of people around the world who has got a lack of tyvek or any suitable filter material
peace to all:)

Tyvek is overrated.
Drill 3/8" hole in lid. Stuff with polyfill. Trim excess off the top. Place lid on jar, cover in triple layer coffee filter. Install ring. Trim excess coffee filter material off(optional). Cover with aluminum foil. PC. Inject THROUGH A-foil. Put a piece of tape or another layer of A-foil over injection hole. Grab A-foil and lift it up 1 inch and let it set itself back down onto the jar. This will allow air to come under the foil but keep contams from LANDING on your filter material. 0% jar contam rate our of 20 jars for me, combined with pretty fast colonization times.
Or just use micropore tape! That's what I do now. Soooo simple!
