Hay? Why not?
    #545779 - 02/09/02 02:39 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I noticed there is a tek for Timothy Hay here

I have heard people say that Hay does not work... why?

I have two mini bales of Timothy Hay so I think I'm going to try it. I just don't see why it wouldn't work.

Min. Crude Protein - 7%
Min. Crude Fat - 1%
Max. Crude Fiber - 33%
Max. Moisture - 15%

We'll let you know how it goes.

I am kinda working with timothy hay too, but a much simpler kind of idea, I took hay, stuffed it into jars, and stuck it in the microwave for a long ass time, with a bit of water in the jar, I poured off the resulting hay tea, and then put them in the microwave again.  The moistened hay was then allowed to cool with the jar tops on (I'm using about 1L spaghetti sauce jars) and after a day I added some crumbled cake at the top of the jar quickly.  With one jar I had a glass tube in the hay, so the crumbled cake was added deeper into the center of the hay mat.

We'll see how it goes!  Worth a try anyway

Two problems with hay.

One is that hay, by deffinition, has seeds in it. Seeds are basically grain. Therefore you can't treat it like straw. Nobody would even imagine that they could just pasteurize rye and not get contams. Same thing with the grains in the hay. In actuality the seeds are much smaller and can be somewhat pasteurized, just not very reliably.

Second problem is that the seeds in hay make it much more thermogenic than other bulk subs. It makes a lot more heat, which can damage mycelium while stimulating thermophillic bacteria. This is what kills most people with hay, bacterial contamination.

Hay can be mixed with straw (10-20%) if you really want to use it.

Hmm I see so the seeds are the problem..

Well if I had straw I'd use that... I'm just having problems finding it.

I recently moved to an old farmhouse, complete with a large barn... full of hay. I'm definately going to be trying different methods to make use of it !!!

If you can't find straw at a garden center or a landscaper or something then try craft stores. Compared to garden center prices you pay out the wazoo, but then considering what you yield with it, $5 is worth several ounces. It's usually near the floral foam and the dried flowers and wicker baskets and stuff. Mini bales are $5 and measure 6 in by 6 in by 12 in, perfect for filling a large 22 qt pot for pasteurizing. Walmart sells them seasonly in some locations, sometimes as cheap as $.50 a piece. Again in the craft section.
Good luck.

You may still have the thermogenic issues to deal with no matter how you use it.

One thing is certain, it has to be in something sealed. Hay isn't as selective as straw, and therefore will contam if exposed to unfiltered air. I guess if you do small amounts the thermogenisis can be dealt with. It just seems like a lot of effort to use hay when you don't need to. Just cuz you can use it doesn't mean you should.
