do the cakes need to be placed on the lids or can they be placed on the perlite the is in the bottom of my chamber

This question should have been placed in cultivation. I am going to answer it anyways.
Either way is fine, I place mine directly on the perlite. Sometimes if the perlite is too damp you will get water logged mushrooms that grow near the bottom of the cake. No harm in that though.
