Ive been reading my books and im very eager to take myself on a journey to 'hopefully' find some Morels. Ive afew ideas of where im going to look and im looking forward to my mini expedition !.
One thing worries my abit though.
I wondered if anybody could tell me any defining features that separate Common Morels from the not so nice false ones ?
I tried to search the posts but didnt seem to find alot ( maybe i used it wrong ). So i thought id ask you guys, if you would be so nice as to tell me !.
Thank you for any help, much appreciated !
Peace.

Hey, False morels really dont even resemble a morel, i can't believe some people are actually stupid enuff to think these are a morel lol! I've seen a few in my days but they are fairly uncommen. heres a picture of one with some details to help you prevent them http://www.mushroomexpert.com/morels/false.html False morels are not hollow unlike regular morels. The saying is If it's not hollow don't swallow! lol hey if you need any more morel information feel free to ask. ive been doing it all my life and consider myself a master morel hunter lol hey goodluck!

Well, I have been gathering black and yellow morels for about a week now in the olive groves around my girlfriend's house. They are distinguished from false morels (at least helvella species) by the fact that, while helvellas actually possess a normal umbrella cap that is just wrinkled and mottled to the point where it looks a bit spongy, true morels do not have a typical "cap". Rather, they fruit as a hollow, sponge-like bulb which is very unique in appearance.

Hey man, nice to hear from someone local. Ill still go out on my mission. Im craving those walks around the woods and fields that i did last Autumn. Shame about the Morels though, sorta takes the effect out of mushroom hunting when you know your not going to find any ( ill have to read up on what else to look out for ). Ya never know i might get lucky.
Thank you,,, i think !
That Morel site thats linked at the top looks good, thank you for that !!
Thanks everyone !

If your after some choice edibles you might want to keep your eyes peeled for the St Georges Mushroom (Calocybe gambosa) which pop up round St Georges day (hence the name lol ).
They're a big, meaty mushroom and are quite abundant round here given the right conditions.

hey Yorkk....learn well (pictures) the difference between true pits (holes).... and convolutions / wrinkles(which can create holes) in the caps(heads).....and ALWAYS cook the MMH U know what!.....(cant repeat what that stands for here)....out of any morel type mushroom first before eaten....so as to cook out all the rocket fuel out of them first(they can kinda look like little rockets some times).....MUST be cooked completely through first.....the people at these links should be able to show you to the gps/ground zero for Morels and more when the season has sprung.....and I see ya like maps so......
