So i was wondering... My friends got a couple 150 watt CFL light, the kind with the mogul base. Is this the same connector as with HID lights (HPS and Metal Halide)? If so, could a 100 watt or 200 watt HPS be put into one of these sockets and work like it should?

They are very similar to normal fluorescent and have a high blue spectrum, which is what plants need for vegetative growth. So they will be fine for vegetating plants and would be effective for an area of about 9 square feet. (see light area calculator at :- http://www.sweetleaf.co.uk/lightarea.php)
However, you will need at least a 400-600w HPS (NOT MH) for flowering. If your really can't afford that, about 400w + of red light bulbs MAY help a bit for flowering, but you'd be better putting them outside. Flower them by changing light cycle to 12hrs a day, do this once they've reached 12"+.

.. yes, i realize all of that, thanks. My friend's grown plenty of stuff under these lights, he just didn't want to go out and buy another expensive fixture if he could just use the one he has. Guess not though, thanks.

He deffinatley can use these. I do this:- I have a small (3' square) cuboard which i germinate 10-20 seeds/cuttings and vegetitate young plants. By the time they are ready to flower the main grow room is ready to harvest. Once harvest is done yo can move new plants into the main grow room. You could even start the fowering cylce by addig a timer and some red or halogen lights (carefull they're HOT, hang them 1m+). This will mean you harvest almost twice as often (+/- every 8-9 weeks)
Cheap and easy to do if you have the space (about 3' cubed cuboard or bigger)

lolol nono man, he's used these lights before with quite amazing results in veg and flower, he was just looking for some smallish HPS lights for a cabinet, and was hoping the same socket would work.
And you wouldn't have to add the halogen lights, like you said, they're quite hot, and inefficient at the distance you'd have to place them to not burn the plants.
It's all good though, looks like a base is needed along with the bulb. Thanks for responding man, i do believe it's J time.

Try eBay or :- http://www.hydrolight.co.uk/index.php?main_page=products_all
If you get a second hand one; buy a new bulb. They deteriorate in efficiency with age. Order sockertry from a local hardware store, if they don't have it they can order it for you, you won't look dodgy as these kinda sockets are used for other things too and you can pay with cash.

I think Dr J misunderstood the question.
Orig poster asked if he could use an HPS bulb in a CFL socket. The answer is no, the HPS requires an external ballast to power the light. The CFL socket just connects directly to your houses power connection (if you installed it in your ceiling or such).

Oh, I already knew about 1000bulbs.com
I thought you meant like really build it from scratch. Not just buying a ballast and a bulb and a cord, etc

I always looked at buying equipment as an investment man. Its worth spending a little bit of dough now to save you money later. The money you save on buying weed can go to pay off the light debt and you'll also have a nice amount of good smoke to enjoy as well. One harvest saves you enough money to pay off your light debt at least double, if not more, so if you can just go out and buy a decent setup. If you can find a shop maybe they have a buyback program, my shop will buy back the light or put the money towards a new light, so if i want to upgrade in the future its not going to cost me near as much as if i were starting from scratch.
