What about mink poo...
    #5454707 - 03/29/06 11:01 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys.  Today I ran across an interesting offer from a friend in the mink business.  He has offered me as much mink poo as i want for no price, but I wondering if mink poo would be a good addition to mushroom compost.  I have been told by many gardeners that mink poo is the shit when you grow other crops.   I was hoping that someone with a better knowledge of using poo as a substrate or poo composts could let me know if this offer is of any value to mushroom growth.  Thanks for any and all advice.

I've been told horse poo is the best, but the only way this was found to be true is from testing and experimenting, you never know unless you test! If it works let us know!GL

Cows, horses, and elephants are herbivores--and a mink is not, so doubt it would be very good.

A mink is a weasel that has evolved a preference for red paint. This attraction is so strong that occasionally the paint is sucked right out of pails, onto the coats of innocent weasel wearers.

Hey, I'm on neither side of the issue. Just find it amusing, sorta like choosing what form of life to destroy in order to feed ourselves, then whining that others are making the wrong choice. None of us are innocent until we can make food from raw ingredients. Only then can we get haughty (assuming that blows your kilt up). Meanwhile, the best we can do is naughty (which can also involve kilts).

I dont mean to hijack this thread but...see my dog eats everything and anything, sticks, branches, grass, toy fibers.. I was thinking, if I made her own food. make little bite size food, and add some ground up straw, grain, crap that horses eat, baked it, and then gave it to her as a regular diet. would her poo be usable? it be just like horse poo right?

Actually, you are putting this thread back on track. Don't do that to your poor dog. Feed your dog what is best for its health. Horse poo is just too available to manipulate a dog's diet into a substitute. Pet manures, carnivore manures, and even human manures can be composted into excellent mushroom cultivating compost. They are growing mushrooms today in China with human manure. But why bother? Pathogens are frequently cited as a reason for not using pet and human manure, yet they are completely broken down with proper composting.

As for this herbivore/carnivore manure argument, I haven't seen a lick of evidence that mushrooms don't grow on carnivore manure, despite frequent statements that herbivore manure is required. Plant gardeners have been arguing over this same question for years, and most experts that I have read say that it doesn't make a difference, yet the herbivore myth persists. Maybe certain strains of psilocybe have evolved a preference for specific nutes that are in ideal proportions in some manures and not others. It would be easy to visualize that happens in the real world where favorable growing conditions are found in association with specific manures. However, the literature doesn't seem to exist to support our understanding of nutrient requirements of mushrooms, much less that relationship to particular manures. So I think the question is very open to debate, until the evidence is explored.

alright cool, it was just a theory, lol. Im using hpoo right now. Although the thought of turning my dog into a harvest poo factory has crossed my mind. Also ive ben hearing about flesh eating mushrooms. does anybody know a little about them. the ones that grow on dead remains of animals and all that?

Awesome, now I haven't started growing yet but I know that I'll be growing for sometime. It's a great hobby in my opinion.

This is my order I'm doing it in lol:

1. Cakes
2. Casings
3. 1 Pint RYE BERRIES cased
4. Hpoo tek
5. Buffalo poo

Though it will probably take me a year to do all of that.

you want animals that are grass and straw eaters...not meat eaters!~

think...

horses, cows, elephants, zebras, rhinos, llamas, buffalo, donkeys, mules...etc

deer and elk work sometimes...depending on what they eat.
