contamination... what from

i have black spots all over about half of my jars.... i did one pint jars with fine vermiculite with 2 inoculation holes and coffee filter over the top of them half the jars are lost bc of these black spots, and the other half have been growing real slow...what can this be from
My opinion is that 1 there is not enough air for the jars to breath.... but tihs is my first time so i have no idea what it is... can anyone help?!?!

If all you used for a filter was a coffee filter, I can almost guarantee that this was the problem. A coffee filter is good to use when PC'ing to keep water from going into the jars, but you need polyfil, tyvek, micropore tape, etc to use as filter material.

Using a coffee filter is like trying to catch a mosquito with a busted fishing net.

If you absolutely HAVE to use coffee filters (can't get any tyvek or micropore tape) try doubling them up. It worked once for me, but IMO, the tyvek is best. As for the slow growth of the non-contamd jars, fine verm colonizes kinda slowly, anyway. At what temp are you incubating? How long ago did you inoculate?
