Canada says annual seal hunt to start Saturday

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's annual seal hunt, the focus of a major protest effort by animal activists, will start on Saturday and could last longer than usual because the ice floes on which the seals gather are in poor condition, officials said on Thursday.
Canada says a total of 325,000 harp seal pups can be shot or clubbed to death this year. The first stage of the hunt, which takes place on ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Canada's East Coast, will account for just over 90,000 animals.
Activists, who say the killing is cruel and unnecessary, say they will film the proceedings. The hunt officially starts at 6 a.m. on Saturday.
Hunters usually take between five and eight days to meet their quota but officials say the ice is much more broken up than usual and the seals are very scattered.
"It will be slower ... this will drag on," said Roger Simon of the federal fisheries ministry.
The second and more important stage of the hunt, which takes place off the coast of Newfoundland, will start on April 4 and last for most of the month.
A number of high-profile figures, among them former French film star Brigitte Bardot and ex-Beatle Paul McCartney, have called on Canada to scrap the hunt.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper shrugged off the protests on Thursday, saying he had no intention of commenting on what Bardot and others were doing.

Eat the meat and wear the fur - it's a tad bit cold up where they are

All the haters need to understand is that the hundreds of thousands of seals need to be killed cause they are eating up all the cod fish off the Atlantic coast. The place has been overfished by Canadian vessels, and largely due to foreign ships as well (ie Spain). Whatever fish there are left, the seals are eating them up. There is wayyyyy too many seals and the fish population isn't enough to sustain them, OR the people. Thus, it can be argued that in killing the seals they are actually helping out the cod population!

I see the point in killing them, and im not against hunting. It just seems like a poor way to do it, id rather kill them without relish.

The Inuit have survived in Northern Canada for thousands of years, and while I am personally mortified at the idea of beating a seal (or any animal) to death with a club...it is not my place to interfere with the ways they have learned to survive.
If it was a bunch of rich guys from SW Ontario going up for a week of seal-bashing as some kind of twisted "sport"...I might have something angry to say about it.
People doing what they need to survive in a harsh climate...not so much.

Oh, I was under the impression it was a bunch of rich white guys.
Regardless, this is the modern era, do they still need to club a seal to death in order to survive? They cant buy some synthetic clothing? Are they not part of the general Canadian society with stores and jobs and money, still living without electricity and the like?
Not trying to be rude, Im just wondering if it is still necessary for survival, or is it necessary for money/sport, or is it necessary for the holiest of holies, tradition.

After doing a classic 5min google research, i found that
Quote:
Google said: -natives do not participate in the hunt, "white" fisherman do -the fur is sold, not worn, to europe where it accounts for a portion of the fishermans wage -only 3% of the seal's diet is cod. -canada lists seals as fish so quota can be higher (not sure what that means, but it sounds bad)
anyway im sure all that is not the whole truth, people hunt all over the world.

I don't see the point in arguing about the actual necessity of killing those seals. Even though I am personally against hunting animals for their fur (since we have much beter synthetic materials nowadays), human beings have always been hunters in most parts of the globe. Why isn't the uproar of "animal empathists" directed upon the pork and chicken industries for example? Now that's what I would call cruely.
And for the actual means of killing them, I'm pretty sure the only difference between shooting them and clubbing them is in the mind of the hunter (and of innocent observers such as us). The seal dies anyway! Unless a seal comes across a particularly sadistic hunter of course...

Simple...Because Pigs and Chickens aren't as cute as baby Seals. If it was something like a yearly rattlesnake hunt, no-one would say a word.

Exactly! And also for the simple reason nobody sees the conditions in which those animals are raised and how they are being killed in an assembly-line fashion.

I think in order to participate in the seal hunt you should be required to make an attempt to use all of the creatures parts. Maybe set up shops that help you out in some areas of doing that. I just get the feeling alot of the seal hunters are doing it for sport....

Yes. Think for example McDonald buying and then destroying rain forests in south America, along with all of its original flora and fauna(plants and animals) to grow cows for our Big-mac. Falling the trees causes land erosion so that it will take thousands of years for the forest to revive itself. What can i say, death of some seals seems almost trivial if you know what's really going on all around the world.

Paul McCartney and some american activist groups called sea Shepard's lead by a guy called Paul Watson and of course greenpeace came to Norway when we started to hunt whales again (there was a stop for some time in whale hunting here) with their Disney ideology and told us how intelligent these animals was and whatever nonsense . sea shepards also sank Norwegian ships at night to prevent this, acts of terror if you ask me,. now like rono said, seals are cute animals so there will be conflict. i hope Canadians do as we did, and throw those greenpeacer on the sea (yes toss them in the sea literally) and dint put up with this nonsense Disney way of thinking.
Norway used to hunt seals before , i dont know if this is still going on actually or stopped, but i remember the protest, mostly from america, the way they was killed, how cruel and evil it was. well Ive seen seals gets killed and its over pretty quick, i have also seen how other animals gets killed in a slaughterhouse and i would say its more or less the same amount of "cruelty"
