Sterilization for "bag" methods question....
    #5454203 - 03/29/06 08:25 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Im looking to begin a bulk invitro grow using ovenbags. Instead of preparing a ton of jars for my bulk substrate is it possible to sterlize the bag by itself then to PC the bag with WBS inside of it? I understand the bag might burst if I close it up but what if I leave it open at the top somewhat so it can vent? Im trying to distance myself from jars as much as possible since I have a small PC.

It's certainly possible, but I wouldn't recommend it. Oven bags work okay for pasteurizing. You need to seal the bag following sterilization to prevent any contaminates. If you want to get some bags, I would recommend getting a hold of some filter patch spawn bags. They have the means of allowing gas exchange, oven bags do not.

yah, leave the tops open a bit so the steam and such can escape. If you wanted to you could use the coolder tek. Just get your water anywhere below 180, it has to be hot, stick your bags in a cooler and pour in the water. the cooler insulates it so it stays warm for well over 2,3 hours.

thanks for the replies...I would be making a homemade filter patch if I decided on using the bags. The only reason I chose ovenbags is because im poor.

Good point. I can get 100 bags for $30 and not have to worry about making them or having them melt in a PC. 100 bags will last a long time.
