Guide to making a humidifier from cheap mist makers available from eBay.

I'm about to start my first grow so I've been gathering components together and managed to find a mist maker on eBay for $5aus. I decided to make a more robust and elegant enclosure then the one detailed in the original PF tek and thought I'd document its construction in case anyone else wanted to know how to make one.

Materials required: - Tupperware container, this one was chosen for its shape and lid which can be used to refill it when water levels go down. - Mist maker - Cooling fan, I used a 90mm one salvaged from a computer someone threw out. - 1m 12.5mm clear tubing - 13mm barbed joiner - 4 x 5/32" 40mm screws - 4 x 5/32" nuts - 2 part epoxy resin or silicon
Tools: Cordless drill with 5/32" drill bit Hobby knife
Method: Take the top off the Tupperware container and lay it on a flat surface.

Rest the fan on top of it and mark where the screw holes are.

Measure the diameter of the fan then mark out a circle. With the drill, perforate the edges by drilling lots of holes along the circumference of the circle.

With the hobby knife, carefully cut around the edges and remove the waste material. Drill 5/32" holes where you marked where the screws to support the fan went.

Measure the size of the holes needed for the barbed joiner and mist maker's power cord then mark them out. Repeat the process used in the previous step to remove the unwanted material.

Flip the lid over and insert the barbed joiner into its hole from underneath. Apply a decent amount of epoxy or silicon to hold it in place then wait for it to dry.

Flip the lid back over and secure the fan with your 4 5/32" screws.

Thread the mist maker's power cord through the hole made for it, attach the tubing to the barbed joiner, place the lid back on the container then fill it up to about the 1/4 way mark and you're ready to go

All up it?s cost me around $20aus ($14 US). The lid makes it easy to refill and I can turn the mist maker and fan on independent of one another.

how so? i think the point of his hose is to keep the humidifer on the outside of the terrarium and pipe in the humidity through the hose...

I don't know how long PC fans last in wet environments, I suspect much longer than an hour, but it would probably be wise to always run the fan when the fogger is on, and run it for a minute after turning off the fogger. That will keep it dry, since it is pulling in dry air, and can only get wet if it is overwhelmed with fog. Looks like a killer design, similar to agar's, keep us posted on how it's working out.

I tested, and my 120 mm ventilator burned in 15 min, you need a greenhouse fan :-(

You did a GREAT pictorial & fine work.
But, suggest you go to a BIGGER container (like 5 gallon bucket). And, go with a SQL cage type fan. Those little PC fans don't create PRESSURE. You will need PRESSURE to PUSH THE MIST into the hose. PC fan will die.

Another design that works is like mine. which would be to drill holes in the sides of the tub closer to the top and screw plastic connectors into the tupperware. Then just hook an aquarium pump up to it that runs 24/7 for FAE then the fogger kicks on. Works great with a cpvc valve on the 1/2 hose to controw outflow. Most of those barbed fitting can be found with threading on them so you just cut a hole to the about right size and screw it right in. You can also get a tap if your going through thick plastic and use a little teflon tape. I had to get the tap at a plumbing specialist but it was cheap.

Thanks for you input guys. After running it for 24 hours everything is still working, but the fan did get alarmingly wet. Time for plan B...
Nice set up agar, If I can find a cage blower cheap I'll swap it over for that, if not I might try JSshroom's method with an aquarium pump. Alternatively I might make a separate small Tupperware container with a couple fans stacked on top of one another (to increase the static pressure) blowing air through a tube into the container with the mist maker in it with a tube going from that container to the terrarium. Guide will be updated as soon as I have the parts.

Great writeup and wicked pictorial.
I am intruigued by the use of an aquarium pump for this smaller setup. Perhaps leading into airstones in the water so that A) incoming air isn't dry and B) it doesn't just push its own dry air out of the exhaust, but diffuses into the air through bubbles.
5 shrooms for you!

it flows out the exhaust into fruiting chambers with filters on the sides creating lots of fae. I do still mist which may be do to the dry air. I will try using air stones but my humidity guage says that it holds good humidity just from the fogger alone. Sometimes if you open the tank up awhile after the fogger quits there is still fog in the air even with the dry air.

they just work better for some smaller setups like mine. a vicks wont fit in my kit. That and a vicks puts out a lot of humid air that may be too much for a small setup.
I have had great success with this. different strokes for different folks.

you can get one from an hvac repair place or www.Grainger.com Like I said different strokes for different folks. If you want to use a vicks go for it. It would put out too much rh for my kit
