Glass Petri's Or Plastic??
    #5453931 - 03/29/06 03:40 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

So I'm planning on ordering some petri dishes soon and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with plastic and glass dishes. It seems to me the glass ones would be easier to clean and more versatile. You could sterilize them in the oven, whereas I don't think plastic would hold it to it very well. Hmmm the glass ones would probably make awesome print plates as well.

I hate glass petri dishes. Plastic is much easier to work with and you don't have to clean or sterilize them. They come out of the package sterile. Use once and throw away. They cost less than a dime each. You can't wash and resterilize a glass one for that.

well put. i have some packaged plastics for agar work (that i have yet to do hehe) and you don't really need to toss something like that in the oven. or at least i didn't think you did. glass is more expensive, more breakable, and alltogether more dangerous i'd say. reusing something like that might cause small scrapes and cuts in the glass to harbor contams...who knows. i'd say buy disposable plastic
but, again, i stress that i have not done any agar work, and i probably shouldn't even be posting. just telling you what i've been taught, realize it is the opinion of an ill-experienced pup.
good luck on whatever you need the dishes for!

I love my glass petri dishes.
I have over 100 of them.
I've only broke 3 lids in 5 years...not too bad.

I also have some of the auto-clavable plastic ones.
They are pretty cool too.

I sterilize my petri dishes in a dri-clave...

Looks like a toaster oven...

Yes, I think the Plastic ones are easy to use, but the glass just seem more sturdy to me. Plus you cant scratch glass with metal for those of you who didn't know, especially Pyrex. I think Roadkill has me convinced. Glass just seems cleaner to me. Another advantage is that if you print a few caps right on the dishes, you can just use a razor to scrape them all up.

IMHO.....Best to buy a few Pyrex glass ones & a 50 pack of sterile throw away ones. Then, get more of whichever you like best. Best of both worlds. I prefer glass ones, for personal use & disposables for shipping.

I think I'm gonna go with the glass ones. I can get 12 of them on ebay for 25 bucks, sounds like a deal. They would be only for my use. Thanks for the info guys. One more question, I noticed there are some generic glass ones, and then Pyrex ones. I know Pyrex definitely makes very good glass and they look like they are more quality than the off brand ones. I was wondering if there's a difference.

Plus pyrex, is much more recyclable if you were ever to throw it away

tried to find the link again as reference but to no avail - apparently glass surfaces (as well as stainless steel actually) cause H202 to decompose faster, so if you plan on using peroxide as an antibacterial in your agar its something to consider and a vote for the plastic (although the amount of difference it makes, i have no idea... could be negligable, its more a concern when you're dealing with really high industrial strength concentrations, not something so dilute as for these purposes)

as for pyrex vs. generic, most use the term "pyrex" nowadays not always referring to the brand but more or less to let you know its safe to heat and cool, lesser glass might crack on you in a PC or during cooling when you're sterilizing it... so i'd opt for the pyrex since obviously the point of glass petris is to keep em around longer!

Plastic also comes in lots more shapes and types. Here's where I get mine. I hope the link works. A case of 500 is $37.50 http://www.cenmed.com/productDetail.asp?productid=35926&catID=&category=5565&mainCat=LNS&cat=5235

I myself prefer glass over plastic anyday. Also a great container are those babyfood jars agar cooled at a slant they make excellent slants!

also, im thinking about using half pint tapered jars as a replacement. and glass test tubes are cheaper. just put on a slant when cooling and you can fill up your PC with em! just ideas, but it sure is nice getting some legit equip here and there! go for the glass, baby!

I think im gonna get the glass ones. Agar, Roadkill, and hyphae all agree. They just seem like they would be easier to sterilize and work with over the plastic ones. Thanks everyone for their input!
