Does anyone know what kind of lights are used on telephone poles? Aren't the blue-ish colored lights Metal halide and the orange-ish colored ones high pressure sodium? Kinda looking into growing some "house plants", but I have no money for supplies.

The blueish ones might be MH but they are more likely mercury vapor. The orange ones are in fact HPS.
Stealing is bad though.

you're right, but man, you'd be retarded to climb a telephone pole and steal one of those lights... you'd still need a ballast. Do it right or don't do it at all.

Alot of them are metal halide. But getting those fuckers of the pole w/o getting caught, shocked severly or falling off the pole would be more or less a miracle. Bad idea man, just splurge the 200-300 bucks for a nice grow light.
edit - not to mention the wiring/balas is all differnt than what a normal elec. outlet can handle

Yes I'm going to jack a fucking street light, i'm broke as shit. I'm just not sure which one to jack. Nor am I afraid of dieing trying to get one or getting caught by the 5-0 as I would do it in a seculded area in the middle of the night.
Im guessing that this is the MH (looks green but is blue), took the pics from outside the house...

And this is the HPS I belive...

Those lights will be useless to you even if you can get one down the ballast they are running on are designed to work on 480V which you don't have in your home.

If it works give us a shout, i know someone who reckons he's done this.
I think he said he knicked his from outside a pub ( one of those big lamps they use to illuminate things )
I think its a mad idea, and alot of effort / risk for something that might not even work !
Sorry, just read those posts !. Wont even work.

This thread will be locked but before it is let me be the first to call you an idiot. You know how dangerous 460V is? It can kill you in a heart beat how the fuck did you think you are going to get the light off there while its wired in hot? You probably haven't even thought of anything have you? It's not like there a disconnect on the damn thing jackass.

as long as the bulb watts match the ballast output yes. The MH might be a little more tricky because there are 3 different size mogul bases so you would have to match the socket size

if your brothers an electrician see if he can get you a temporary work light generally they are 400 or 1000 watt HPS and are designed to work on 120V or 277V that will work great for a grow and would be a lot safer for you to procure.
