WBS too slow
    #5452234 - 03/28/06 05:44 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I have 4 WBS jars colonizing, two half pint jars and two pint jars. I inoculated last monday and they spent the first week incubating wrapped in a blanket on a heating pad (same one i used for first grow with brf w/ pretty good results). yesterday i made a TIT setup and they have been incubating in it for around one day now. temps are around 82-85 degrees and the grains were soaked for 24 hours then simmered for 10 minutes and pressure cooked for an hour.

the jars have a layer of tyvek, then the lids, then polyfil in the inoculation holes. the bad news of all this is that after a week there are tiny specs of mycelium in each jar, and it hasnt changed in a day or two. waht could be the problem and how can i go about fixing it

for part of the week i had tin foil covering the lids of the jars but i took it off for the TIT.

thanks

well, tyvek and polyfill is way overkill for one. i've done it for a while with just polyfill and it was plenty...

so air x-fer will help. how's the moisture content?

Under his instruction, I taped drumsticks to his head and turned him into a sort of mummy, or perhaps a caterpiller in a cocoon. He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

sometimes there are little bubbles of moisture on the sides of the jar between the grain and the glass. around 40%-50% of grains opened a little bit. the above average moisture could have been due to too many cc of spore solution as i wanted to use the whole syringe and not waist it, so each jar got around 3 cc, some less.

An hour in the PC for that small of jars is way overkill. You *may* have cooked off alot of the nutrients.

The heating blanket will cause the jars to dry out, TiT is far superior.

Letting your grains incubate at room temp (what I do) is better than using a heating blanket.

Give them more time in the TiT before you get bummed.

You just answered your own question. If more than 25% of your grains opened, then your grains are officially caca (shit in spanish  ). It happened to me the first time i used WBS, about 50% of the grains had opened. I went ahead and inoculated anyways. Everything went well for the first week, mycelium grew but very little and slow. Then after about a week, growth stopped completely and all the jars contaminated after another 2 weeks.

You sir need to learn from this and start all over. sorry to be the bearer of bad news.. :frown: Just take it as a lesson. I mastered the art of WBS once that happened to me, knew what to do and what not to do the next time around.

OH BTW, the bubbles are another sign of "too much moisture." All my jars had bubbles too, they all eventually contaminated, and trust me they were sterile.
