Poo!

I've already had about 8 pans of casing with poo to fruit, but I ran outta shit...
so today I went to a horse farm and got more, but it's not just poo. It looks like there are wood chips, dirt, some hay and some rocks all mixed in. My guess is they just took the bucket of the tractor and scraped the corral grounds...
Can I use this? It doesn't smell like piss, and it's been sitting there a while, but I'm not sure about the "additives."
Has anyone had a similar experience?
Thanks!

It will work. But it's obviously not the best kind of poo to use. Try to take out the stones and sticks and large bits of hay. The dirt your gonna kinda have to live with. You can try to remove it with a strainer but that will be a dusty pain in the ass.
Add some coir to it. It will colonize super fast.

I respectfully disagree Cray. I get my manure for free and spend a good amount of time picking out the choice nuggets. I have piles upon piles of aged manure at my fingertips and would never spend one red cent on someone else's shit (pun intended). If you can find the good aged manure for free, get it. I've probably gone through about 100 pounds of this stuff over the last year, so having it for free has been most welcome.
Work hard at your hobby and you'll enjoy those fruits that much more.

Well put Wronguy. I will always be an advocate for gathering your own poo if you have the means at all. (which is basically a CAR but preferably a truck)
After the first time I went out I was surprised how fond I was of horse manure. Once aged and weathered properly I feel actually has a NICE smell believe it or not. Best substrate at the VERY best price you can't beat that. I had a pile laying on a tarp in my backyard when my cousin was over. I told him it was horse poo and he made that "icky" face. SO I held a handful under his nose and made him a believer. lol...I'm much bigger then him

yeah, this poo doesn't even look like poo. it's been degrading so long it just looks like a big dirt clump.
ive tried sneaking out to pastures at night, but got pseudo-caught...was hoping this would make life easier.
what do you guys tell the farmers you want the poo for?

Tell them you need it for your vegetable garden or that you're growing tomatoes. Trust me, they'll never think twice. Your best bet is to find a small boarding stable where the owners hand shovel the manure. This will alleviate a bunch of dirt and unwanted hay in your mix.
Establish a good rapport with the boarding facility and you'll get a free ticket to happiness. I don't even have to ask to get my manure. It pays to talk to people face to face.

My motto is to say as little as possible about my actions. A couple tips tho.
Call it manure, not shit, not poo, not doo doo. Manure. To be used as fertilizer for your garden. When I'm in a situation where I'm worried someone will ask questions I don't want to answer I like to start with the questions myself. Just ask them stuff about there farm. How many horses they have, talk about the weather, whatever just make small talk be friendly and they wont mind you coming back.

In fact, most horse stables love you taking the poo off their hands (pun intended). It's like they're giving back to their community, and the piles out back aren't getting out of control. Last time I went to collect some, the lady said that next time I should bring a pickup truck and fill the bed up. I almost cried. It's spring time and I've got land.

If you can't stick you hands into a pot of soaked poo and do your work, this isn't your hobby, no offense.
