Fruiting

While looking at the cultivation directions I came across a statement that confused me. I was hoping that someone can help me with this.
This is what the step about inducing fruiting says:
First, they need light. Only a dim light is needed. A fluorescent lamp or indirect sunlight is plenty of light. Mushrooms do not gain energy from the light like plants do, but in this particular species of mushroom light sends a signal to the mycelium that it is time to produce mushrooms. A source with a wide spectrum of light, especially containing lots of blue light (daylight and fluorescent plant lights are very good examples of light with lots of blue) is best, but a low wattage (15 watts is plenty) incandescent light bulb will supply enough light.
Now, does this mean that they need constant light? Would it still work if I kept it on a porch and just let the sunlight do the work or do I have to keep light on the 24 hours a day? Thanks for the help.

Indirect sunlight would probably be best. if you can see your casing with out any extra light I believe there is plenty of light to initiate pinning! some people keep it on a 12-12 hr light schedule it really doesn't matter, all the light is for is to iniate pinning so a few hours a day will due or like you said you can keep them out on the porch, I would keep some kind of shade on it though!gl

People vary on how much light they give their shroomies. Some do 12 on 12 off. Others do every 6 hours. Others do only 6 hours a day. Some do less. Basically what the artical is saying is the mycelium responds better to a certain spectrum of light, not necessarily the brightness. You definitely don't want to give them constant light though. They need a substantial amount of time in the dark every day. It will still work if you kept them out in the sunlight all day, but it most likely wont be the best route. just get a flourescent light on a timer and do a little experimenting on your own about how much light to give them. good luck
