Honestly... when it comes to the Universe-- You, him, myself and every other member of the human species really has no idea and thus is not in the position to correct another person on the matter...

No idea?  Dont you ever look at the sky?  All it takes is one look and you can get a pretty good idea about the universe.  Some people actually study the universe.  They have nifty devices called telescopes that allow them to make observations by looking real far.  By studying these observations they are able to make statements about the nature of the universe.  While not always correct, we are far from "no idea" about the universe

Scientifically, you can only have theory.
There is no fact of the big bang, only the theory of the big bang etc.

I kind of like the idea that you guys are all admitting that humans are already inferior to whatever aliens might come by. i wonder if there's other forms of intelligent life that are so modest.

like, imagine that the animals on earth just discuss among themselves that they suck and that humans are infinitely more intelligent and should wipe them off the earth.

i dont mean this to be sarcastic if it sounds that way, i actually find it interesting

Yeah, infinity is a mathematician's wet dream, nothing more.

umm.. care to elaborate on your casual dismissal of infinity? It does not compute in my brain.

And infinity inside a finite universe does? :wtf:

You could have infinitely small in a finitely big universe.

We exist in a finite, linear time frame. We have a beginning and end to anything we observe, do or create. This includes what you're talking about, the supposed infinitly small. Yes, theoretically you can infinitly divide something by 2, making it forever smaller and smaller and smaller. But you would never actually make it infinitly small because no matter how small you made it, you could still stop and measure it. And guess what, it wouldn't be "infinitly small".

Like I said, it's a mathematician's wet dream, nothing more.

Tell that to the engineers who use differentials every day to make tangible things. Just because the human mind cant comprehend it, does not make it a "wet dream".

Well yeah, the fuzzy aspect of it can be applied to our imprecise needs now. But I imagine in the future we will need sharper tools.

I dont see whats fuzzy about differentials, they are instantaneous rates of change. If you have a reason why they are "fuzzy" id love to hear it as I am only a math amateur.

okay here's the line up of words and what I think they mean:
Universe - infinitely large, holds all of existence
galaxy - finitely large held together by gravity
solar system - a collection of stars and/or satellites (planets commits ect) that all orbit each other while orbiting the center of the galaxy.

now the this thing we call gravity holds together the entire existant universe. the existent universe has cycles; it collapses into itself and all of existence is held together at one unimaginably small point in the universe, then it explodes and the smaller parts of the smaller parts of the smaller parts of electrons combine to make electrons and the same with protons and neutrons and then they combine into element and elements combine to make small bodies of gas that gravitate towards each other until they get hot enough to explode into they balls of fire we call stars and after billions of years

fuck this i've lost interest in explaining this but to make a long story short ill say the main ideas of what i was going to say.
universe cycles....blow apart then come back together. physical measurements and time measurements are all related to the human environment (foot=length of old kings foot from back in the day; year=time it takes to earth to orbit the sun; day=time it takes for earth to rotate; hour=1 24th of the time it takes the earth to rotate). and one point i wanted everyone to know:

you are literally looking into the past every time you look at the stars in the sky i don't believe there are any stars within one light year of earth other than the sun therefor every time you see a star in the sky your looking at how it existed a year or more earlier, there are planets, stars, and even entire galaxies we will never see just because the human race will end before the light even reaches earth. even the sun works this way, in (this is a guess) three days we might see how the sun looks today. that's hard to rap your mind around but once it is you start to understand how people have been saying that we may never know of intelligent life other than us

so if the universe isnt infinty then is there a wall or some kind or blockade at the end of the "bubble" we are in?

I dont think that a finite universe necessitates an edge (blockade, wall). I think the ballon analogy was already used. A surface of a ballon is finite, yet has no bound, and if it expands all points expand from each other, there is no center. Remeber, that space and time itself unfurled at the moment of the bang, not just matter/energy. So our universe's bound has been expanding since the bang.

Something like that.

Yes there is aliens, and aliens created by the goverment.  99% of the humans you see are really fake, doing what they should be, created by the goverment to brainwash and hold down the masses.  Why do you think almost everyone you see does the same things, listen to the same music....  I work for Area 51 so, I know I shouldn't be saying this, but O well     :rastamon: :bigjoint: :dogpile: :piss:

yes, to our limited knowledge the universe is expanding, but how the hell do we know its not infinite.

WE are coming closer to being able to be technologically advanced for certain things but the universe is moving(expanding)
