Re: Unfortunately we do not have any kittens [Re: QuantumMeltdown]

I have to agree with QuantumMeltdown about the adults vs kittens adoption strategy. Kittens don't stay kittens very long. If you get one at two or three months old you've got -- at MOST -- a year before he's not a kitten anymore.

And the personality thing is key as well. If you get a kitten you have no way of knowing what he'll be like a year later. And there's almost nothing you can do to change that personality while it's growing up. I have to laugh when I hear people say they want to get a kitten so they can "teach" it how to act right while it's still young. LOL! You can do that to a degree with dogs, but it just doesn't work that way with cats, believe me. I've been living with cats for over forty-five years. I know whereof I speak.

Fortunately, MOST kittens turn out to be pretty decent cats as they get older anyway, but it's by no means a sure thing. One of my current cats is a great big gorgeous grey tiger. Very striking and much admired by all who see him. But he's not that great a cat. He's aloof, demanding, not affectionate, kind of destructive, whiney, and an all around pain in the ass. He was foisted on me as a half-grown kitten and I suspected from day one how he'd turn out. But I had no one else to pass him on to.

Ah well.

You got to admit Pitts make for a great detterance factor. If I was ever a grower or anything like that I would want a big mean Pitt that wasn't socialized to humans living in my yard to protect my shit. I wouldn't beat him or starve him or fight him with other dogs but I would still like for him to be aggresive and not a nice dog.

Pits need love and attention, there aren't many pit bulls that will attack someone else without attacking you. You'd be better off with a german shepard or a Rottweiler. i would never recommend a pit bull to someone lokoing for a guard dog/protection dog/etc. if you own a pit, your either going to own your best friend or your worst enemy. they're naturally protective, but an unsocialized dog is also unpredictable.

personally, i think you should have to have a license to own a dog like that, it's not like they're toys.
