Humor, is it a sense.........?

A sense of humor.... Some people have it , some people don't - and there are varying degrees in between.... But is it really a "sense" like as we know the "5 senses"....?
Is it a learned/developed social skill only, or is it a predisposed genetic trait...?

good question, it's not the same as one of the five senses though, in my opinion at least.

It is similar to a sence of timing or balance.
Some have it and some don't

Some people think of laughing to be like medicine....
---But I don't think that doctors share in that sense of humor....

Humour is a type of right-brain intelligence combined with a good lexicon. You gotta know when to say it, and how to express it.
Your audience is also a factor. For example, some people are a little too stupid to understand sarcasm. You gotta know what type of humour will be most effective in a type of audience.
Example: I was at a party, and a guy there was eating a donut.
Me: What are you thinking eating that man, dont you realize all that fat's going straight to your thighs?
The guy right away took a defensive posture: What, I dont care, I mean Im not gay or anything.

I suppose the best kind of humour is the one that isn't made on purpose ... or at someone else's expense uberknownst to them

If you ever watch footy of the Dali Lama, or get the chance to see him live, there's one distinct feature about him that I love: his bubbling laughter. He's always laughing, always giggling, almost always has a smile on his face, cept of course when he's all serious an whatnot.
Laughter is one of the best forms of medicine and healing.

People from different parts of the world are known for having very different senses of humour, for example English people STEREOTYPICALLY (i'm not saying it's 100% true) are associated with sarcastic (Blackadder), exaggerative (Red Dwarf) or overdramatic humour (Ab-fab), Scottish and Irish people are well known for taking the piss out of everyone (including themselves), Americans gave the world Jackass and the French... well, everyone knows they have no sense of humour...
(sorry, that'd be my English sarcasm slipping through!)
This would lead me personally to believe that at least the majority of humour is learned socially, although it would be interesting to investigate the role of genetics in this development.
I dont think i'd go so far as to label it a sense like the 5 main senses though, it's more like a social skill perhaps, a pattern of behaviour influenced more by external/environmental variables than internal, biological predispositions.
