Putting a new port on my laptop?

Okay. I'm not computer savvy at ALL. I need to know if something is possible, and I assume it is, and if it is, how much I should pay someone to do it.
I have a laptop, and we have high speed internet here. At the moment, I dont have a jack for our internet on my comp. It looks like a phone jack, but fatter. I've been using a PCM-CIA card, or a USB network adapter, but I break them all the time, and this shit is getting expensive.
So I need to know...What is this jack called? A decent PC place should be able to put on on my laptop, right? And how much would be reasonable to pay for this? Parts + Labor?
I appeciate all your help, in advance....

I believe the port you are refering to is a ethernet port. Not all laptops have the option to add an ethernet card asside from USB or PCMCIA. What is the manufacture and model # of your laptop?

Fuck if I know. I'll figure it out when I get home. It may have been put together from parts that were lying around...

Its gonna get expensive....if it can be done at all....
I would find a good quality pc card, or usb adapter that wont break. That or get a wireless router and a wireless card for your laptop

The port is called an ethernet port. The hardware itself, is called an RJ-45 jack. The slot that you push a credit card sized ethernet card into is called a PCMCIA slot. Enough definitions...
You cannot simply add an RJ45 jack to your laptop and expect it to work. The laptops with built in ethernet have a lot of extra hardware designed into the logic board to make it work. If you add the jack, you still lack the hardware to make the jack do anything. Basically, you are screwed with this line of thought... it won't work.
However, you do have options. You can continue to use PCMCIA ethernet adapters. Of course, these are fragile and break easily. I hate them.
You have one more good option. They make USB enabled ethernet devices. This is a little box that has an RJ45 jack on one end and a USB plug on the other. No more fragile than any other USB device and they work great. They are a bit more expensive than a regular PCMCIA card (or at least they used to be), but they tend to last a lot longer. I did a auick google search and pulled the first one I saw as an example. No idea if it is any good or not, but gives you the idea: http://www.netgear.com/products/details/FA120.php

Seuss is right, it's going to be expensive, and pretty much pointless. Purchasing a new laptop would make more sense than trying to do what you suggested.
I also doubt the laptop was put together with parts that were laying around. Laptops aren't really 'user accessible'. And there made that way on purpose. I mean it's possible, but seems unlikely in this case.
Check out that netgear usb thing, seems abit beefier than most of these dongle adapters.

I say just get a wireless router & a wirelss card (if your laptop doesnt have one built-in). that way you dont have to worry about plugging whatever in...and you can surf wherever you want.

I just bought a Linksys one like, 2 weeks ago. Broke yesterday. What a piece of crap...Maybe I'm just hard on this stuff, but christ. I'm severely dissapointed, and am probably going to have to rip this house apart looking for the receipt.

i really don't know how you break those things, i keep two extras in my laptop bag, and they pretty much hang out with the junk in the bottom of my bag, getting knocked around and what not. They still work fine.
