Buying morels online

Ive been searching online and found a website where they sell an ounce of dry morels for 10 bucks. Thing is I really REALLY wanna try morels since I only hear but good things about em and theres nowhere here in my city where I can think of getting them. Is this a good deal? Are dry morels just as good as fresh when rehydrated? Whats the difference between black and regular looking morels? Which is the best tastewise?
And lastly, what can they be compared to? Are they sweet sour...? ha.. Cant wait till I get my hands on some! (and hunting is not an option for me since they dont grow anywhere near where I live )

Well, that's a good price! Are they wild? If so, make sure they're from no earlier than the 2005 season!
IMO dried morels are pretty close to freshies in taste/texture. They seem to lose a little flavor but also gain some depth if that makes any sense......
As for taste, it's hard to explain! Maybye a little nutty, very rich, good texture, and a wonderful bouquet!! Wait about a month or so, there will be freshies for sale!!!

I'm gonna be over in BC and surrounding areas over spring / summer. I'll be looking to buy some morels, dried (and some freshies for eating) but mainly dried to bring back to NZ. Are they very easy to come by bulk deals (like, by the kilogram kinda thing)? And just so I don't get mega ripped, what kind of prices are usual around that time of year?
If anyone knows the names or contact details of some reputable suppliers from BC please feel free to drop me a PM.

I don't think Mycoshack's prices are correct. Morels are not worth $640-960 (ie 16oz @ 40-60/oz) a dried pound. You can get a dried pound of morels from last year's big Alaska crop for about 100 bucks on ebay. These are grey/blonde morels. They are thicker and meatier than the black morels. Morels are already starting to be found down south. Check these progress maps to see if they are coming out in your area. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/morels/maps/progress_maps.html

Either way, it seems like one could make a decent chunk of change selling morels. I've never tried anything like this myself, but I usually find way more morels than I know what to do with each year. I should start drying and selling them! I wouldn't really know where to look for people to sell them to other than like on ebay or something like that.

I scored a quarter pound dried Morels today. The retail Price for these was $268.LB . Now the place I got them from tends to mark prices up a bit. Of course I didn' pay that price for them, Thats around $17. an ounce. Wow, so at $10 OZ, you are getting them for a good deal. I'll post some pictures as soon as I get a chance. If anyone is intrested in some trades drop my a PM (encrypted of course) . And I'll see what I can do, but wait till I get the pictures up and all the details. I can also get Organic Shitakes (Dried).
Peace.

Nice! People do make a living where I am on selling morels. We even have a Morel Mushroom Festival coming up soon!! Anyway, if one knows where to look/has nurtured a few is his/her own patches to fruiting then one could make quite a bit of $$. Cheers

I bought a pound dried of really nice quality black morels from my friends Dan and Candice Hayden at Oyster Creek Mushrooms in Maine (I live in FL, and they shipped them at a really reasonable price, but I forget what that price is...) I paid exactly $100/lb. from them and didn't have any problems with dirt, bugs etc, which can happen buying dried bulk morels from time to time (but not from these guys) I also got a pound of chantrelles (I want to say at $50/lb.) and a pound of dried maitake, but I can't recall the price, probably about $50/lb. You can find them online at; http://www.oystercreekmushroom.com/ but they're not online too much, last I remember, and I had better luck calling them; 207-563-1076 Their website has a lot of cool info on how they started their mushroom business if anyone's thinking of doing the same, and they did it 15 or 20 years ago, when this business was in it's infancy, and as Candice likes to say, unbankable (She couldn't get loans from the local banks, but sure enough, they're doing it anyway, and it's a cool story.) They're good people with good business ethics. I met them at one of Mo-Mei Chen's seminars at University of California, Berkeley campus (now that's a fun town to visit!) Hope that helps...
