I want to learn how to play, but I have no friends that play who could help me out.
Does anyone recommend a good book for beginners to help learn the basics?

Hehe... I believe it. Those "for dummies" books are actually pretty useful a lot of the time.
I'd have made some recommendations, but I really have none... I am mostly self-taught, with a little influence from a long-time-playing friend. I have a few books, but don't want to recommend them, because I haven't even worked my way through any of them yet. :P
BTW, Red, I really like that Final Fantasy album. He's got a beautiful sound going on.

Guitar For Dummies got me into guitar nicely.

I have been playing for eighteen years, and the only help I had initially was the Mel Bay book of chords and my stereo. There are countless on-line lessons that you can listen to as you practice. The toughest part of playing is toughening up your fretting hand, i.e., strength and calluses. It will hurt, and that's when most folks give up. But if you stick with it, playing the guitar is like a video game that you never have to start over. GL.

Also, go to the sticky at the top of the forum and find the last post. that guy put up a lot of helpful guitar resource links like chord finders, theory lessons, jazz primers...
good luck! let us know if you have any specific questions once you get into it.

i learned how to read guitar tablature online, and just taught myself the rest. i can play by ear, but having tabs helps a lot. they shut down mxtabs.net, and i havent found a site as reliable as that one. id just get those tab books from guitar center

I'm not sure if I would even recommend a book. I am like some of the others; I am self taught, with a very little influence from one of my best friends who went to school for bass.
Anyway, I really liked how I got into guitar and I think it helped me to keep going. I started out learning "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Karma Police," by radiohead. I just learned those chords, which obviously taught me the chord but then I could play the song as well. When you start with straight up theory you might get discouraged with the a lack of application. I have been playing for about a year and a half, though I've only been serious with it for about 8 months and I just recently bought a theory book.
I would suggest you first of all just look up tabs on the net for songs you want to learn until you want to get more technical with it.

I would recommend utilizing the guitar alliance website, good info. get the guitar for dummies book and a chord encyclopedia. I am a guitar player and i sucked it up for a long time. that is how it usually goes, you suck for what seems like forever and all the sudden it clicks and ur running through scales and chords like nothing. after a while it also helps to play along with a cd or something, guitar alone isnt good enough. good luck!

Might have been easier just to pick up a Library book. I'd use it to figure out basic chords, and then took a couple of lessons. good luck!

I really would recomend going to a teacher like 4-5 times. You will get most of the basics down and beable to do your own thing after that.

if you get a teacher, get a blues guitarist whose been playing for over 10-15 years. you should learn the scales and some basic beats. afterall, all of our music originated from the blues

Actually, I find jazz guitar to be more useful.
