Please help?
Apparently I have used too little spawn and way too much poo..
I used ? gallon jar of spawn and mixed it with 10lbs of 50/50 poo/straw from Tenn stud substrates?. It has taken forever for my mycelium to colonize the poo?
March 10 Four ? gallon jars of spawn mixed with 10lbs of substrate each jar mixed individually
March 13 Six ? gallon jars of spawn mixed with 10lbs of substrate each jar mixed individually.
It is pretty apparent to me that I mixed up way too much horse poo? seems like a ? gallon jar of spawn is good for 5lbs.
What can I do now?!?!?
3 bins have become contaminated (one way to far to recover, other 2 I applied salt generously on all the contam parts? but I am beginning to think its best to part with them all together so it will not get anything else contaminated )Is it true that the more spawn you use to mix with substrate.. the less the chance of contam?
I cased 5 of them one week ago which were about 80% colonized? the top was getting unevenly colonized and the parts that were colonized were VERY colonized so I decided to case them? BUT NOW it is taking forever for the casing to become colonized? probably like 10% at the moment
AND the other 2? from March 13 have not even colonized 50% to case yet???
I am very distraught at the moment to say the least?.
Can somebody please help, or have any suggestions? For the bins with and without casings?
For any newbies out there?. You might want to take notes on WHAT NOT TO DO!
Spark a joint, pass it around, and spread the Peace!
GOD knows I am about to roll a phatty with hash to quench my misery

1:5 ratio up to 1:10 the more you use past 1:5 the more risk you have of contams. over 1:10 don't even bother.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that backwards? I always thought any more spawn then a 1:5 was unnecessary and just wasting spawn, and anything less than a 1:10 was risky. Maybe just the way you worded it confused me? I dunno.

From what I have been reading here, once something is contaminated, it damn near always will come back.

I'd have to be inclined to think so. The more spawn one would use for the same amount of substrate, the faster it would tend to colonize the substrate, which lessens the amount of time in which contaminants could introduce themselves.
Essentially, the faster the mycelium colonizes, the better. I don't know anything about exact proportions to use or anything, as my friend hasn't grown with bulk substrates (yet! ).
From a completely inexperienced perspective, perhaps, if you have something that isn't contaminated yet, it is possible to add more spawn, if you have it? Maybe inject some lc directly into it or something? I don't have a fuckin' clue, though.
 Peace.

I dont have to much of a clue myself <sigh>
as far as the contam goes, I just got rid of all of the bins with contam
As for my other bins... it would suck if I had to abandon the whole project now, especially this late in the project... all labor, time, and $$$ I put into this project I was hoping to come out with something..
I am still awaiting word hopefully from more experienced growers...

Try injecting lc. If you are out of options and clues, might as well give it a shot (no pun intended ). The more mycelium in there, the better/faster it will colonize.
That is, if the only problem is that you didn't use enough spawn. If they aren't colonizing for another reason, then I dunno.
 Peace.

well still no luck?
I wish somebody would help me out
My casings are colonizing extremely slow and I am starting to wonder if I should scrape it off (it seems that the mycelium is growing very good under the casing, but not colonizing the casing itself)
This is what I used for casing material... 50/50 + tek Vermaculite 15 1/2 cups Peat moss 15 1/2 cups 4 1/2 cups of oyster shell flour (suggested by hyphae)
This is where I purchased the oyster flour
http://www.kkorchid.com/1medium_potting.asp
scroll all the way to the bottom and you will see it...
I made sure the moisture content was good as well.... I just dont know what the problem is?!?!
Can somebody please help, I do support the vendors greatly!

Relax. If you followed the teks you just need to be patient. I can tell by your frantic postings that patience isn't one of your stronger qualities..
RELAX.
Colonization temps around 80 are fine, fruiting temps are a little lower.
You initialize pinning with fresh air exchange.
Make sure that their is some light getting to it, that humidity is high, and that your casings are getting a good amount of fresh air exchange.
Then..relax. You won't learn what you need to learn if you're freaked out.
