I graduated from college in June with a degree in English and American Literature, then I moved boxes around for Google's NYC office for about six months. Now I do data entry in Google's advertising department.
I was listening to Talking Heads' album More Songs About Buildings and Food this morning on my way here.
So think about this little scene; apply it to you life. If your work isn't what you love, then something isn't right. Just look at Bob and Judy; they're happy as can be, Inventing situations, putting them on T.V.

full time dad right now... trying to eventually get myself back to school.. maybe to become a teacher.. since I'd love all the time off (summer, winter vacation, spring break, etc).. and I'd like to make a difference in the world and help even just one kid realize they can think for themselves. I sorta need a job before then though, meh.

I'm somewhere between a prolonged sabbatical and retirement. I wanted to go into counterintelligence in the Army, but that is no longer an option for enlistees. Maybe I'll join as something else, but I am not sure yet.
I am also considering opening some sort of food related operation. Not a restaurant(not as my first venture anyhow), but perhaps a specialty shop. Fresh baked goods, sandwiches, salads, hard to get ingredients, etc. Maybe start writing a cookbook.
For tax purposes I am a "consultant".

im 20, freshman year of college at kennesaw state, ive got a cushy job... i answer phone calls in the claims dept of a home owner's insurance company. only the phone never rings, so i just try to amuse myself on the internet all day. when it DOES ring, it's usually someone from new orleans or florida and they hardly ever speak comprehendable english, so that sucks. but the fun part is when people get mad and yell at me, i dont have to be nice. i get to say whatever i want as long as im not using profanity. occaisionally ill send them to the completely wrong department if they complain about how theyve been on hold for a while just for spite. i cant really complain, its just the most boring job ive ever had. plenty of study time though...

well, what would you do if an angry redneck/angry immigrant/angry close-minded asshole is screaming in your ear about something that isn't your fault, isn't even related to your department, and there is nothing you can do to help them even if you wanted to? all they want to do is vent and yell, and im not paid well enough to be a therapist. like i said, OCCASIONALLY it happens. most people tell me im the nicest guy theyve ever had on the phone. but jackasses get what they deserve.

Out of all the "normal" jobs in the world, that is one of the very few I could see myself doing. If you build a good reputation, there's always work, and people are willing to pay for your quality.
I couldn't believe what some people would pay for a fireplace/chimney, or an outdoor BBQ.

It's real hard work and pays really well. Being that there's a shortage of qualified masons it's only going to pay more and more. I started as a laborer, learned to read blueprints while apprenticing as a mason and moved into management before becoming a journeyman. I should've finished up my apprenticeship, but I can always go back and do that.

Is the shortage of masons only in your area Cowgold, or just generally. I have a possible $12/hr job coming up in the summer, not quite what I'll be doing though, but is in the labor department.

yeah it is.
and sometimes in the summertime he gets a call from a developer that is building a crap load of new homes in one area.
so he will go do tile floors, chimmneys, bbq's...etc.
but then we only get to go fishing a couple times a week.

I need to get a job/career to come up with 30 grand though. I figure if i live on 15 grand a year the rest can go towards putting my own product out there my theory is that if i do this enough times one of them will make lots of money. /crosses fingers

Why doesn't he work for someone else doing the same thing and getting paid more if his employer is really jackin him around?
Each job has a wage scale that every worker should get paid accordingly to their job description. If he's getting paid atleast that then he's not getting ripped off. Ofcourse, that is on commercial work... Residential has a different set of rules.

I'm happy and pissed at the same time about the damn californians coming here to AZ and fucking up our real estate market.
I bought my house 5 years ago for 147k after upgrades blah blah. 2200sq feet etc etc.
Sold it last august for 290k.
Cant buy a damn 1500 sq foot home now for under 250k!
*grunt*
Loan me 100k at 1.5%.

I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings...really I wasn't.
I'm not like that at all.
Some places are alot more expensive than others...is what I was getting at. You could buy a house like mine for probably less than $100,000.00 in South Dakota. Property is very expensive in my part of town.
are we cool?
I hope so.

I believe goobler was getting at the fact that $250,000 isn't that much for a house. Especially for a business owner. In most decent areas, that's a starter house. In the decayed, or less sought after, parts of town you can get 2 or 3 houses for that, but not everywhere.

I'm older now.
and I've changed alot.
Having children really makes you re-evaluate your whole outlook on life.
I know there was a reason that my God has led me down the path that I followed...it was to learn from my experiences in life. and to be able to protect my family...it was no mistake.

I don't consider myself to be a hippie.
But the older that I get... The more I think that we should love one another...and not kill each other.
dig?
I'm really starting to get into environmental issues too...the older I get. Especially trying to help save the Salmon runs here in Washington State. If we don't learn to manage the Salmon...there won't be any in the future for other generations.

Well, I don't start for another week, but I just got this temp job for some housing company. I'll just be doing data entry and other back-office work. It's only for a month, but hopefully the temp agency will find another project for me when that job is done.

Working for your dad is not so slack. I know some dudes and their dad is a wealthy car dealership owner. All had to get 4 year degrees before they worked for him, and start at the bottom. Sure, they do well now but Big Daddy made them earn that shit.

You get a slight advantage in the act of getting the job though, at the very least.

I have always been into Photography, and am currently trying to put together my portfolio, though I did not attend college, for it is far too expensive for the kind of jobs most get afterwards. So for now until I get something going I work in a photo lab, as a photo lab technician. I would rather not say WHAT photo lab I work in.. that is until maybe I work in a diff/better photo lab. But I feel I am good at what I do.

omg.. i thought I was being discreet.. but yes I work at walmart but it is the closest photo lab to where I live, and it pays more than Black's Photography, I used to work there. You had to knwo soooo much to work there and they paid the bare minimum. Walmart started me out at over a dollar more than them.. lol.. listen to me defend my walmart status. Its not that bad I guess eh lol

I had a guy directing in his sleep once. I honestly didn't know he was still asleep, I picked him up in the city and he was wide awake, i'd ask him 'where to now' several times and he would say just keep going straight. So it's about 3:30am, we're in the country somewhere and we get to a fork in the road. Instead of directing he gets out of the cab and kind of stumbles around a bit walking off to nowhere. So I get out of the cab and ask for the fare (which was just under $100), he woke up fully and was pretty puzzled. He wasn't that upset, he just found the whole thing funny. I offered to take him home off the meter which was on the way back anyway.
Another time it's 2am and I get job to pick up from a petrol station. A couple guys get in and say where they're going, we ended up stopping off at a house and one of the guys gets out to pick up who knows what, while his buddy in the backseat starts inhaling a can of butane. Kind of crazy guy, he actually gave me a few chocolate bars, which I didn't mind as I had spent the last hour and a half waiting for a fare smoking a couple pipes.
I get a lot of different types of people, i've had guys fistfighting in the taxi and people trying strangle each other. Junkies nodding off all the time and trying to get out of paying. Had one junkie planning to kill someone who ripped off his drugs, it starting turning into a confessional and he told me about the people he'd killed and about his kids that he never sees, how he wants to die and how beautiful heaven must be. He paid the fare and just walked off into the rain, didn't look like he had anywhere to really go.
There's some really sad people out there and I feel bad about a lot of them. Like the lady I pick up occasionally from the hospital always sobbing. But then it's fun sometimes as well, no smoking in the Taxi unless the driver gets a cigarette, do what you like with the radio, i'm easy going, people with happy attitudes can rub off on you and put you in a good mood.
