I seem to remember reading some posts on thenook before, my memories of it was that it was by far inferior to the shroomery, in terms of posts and amount of users.. I never actually registered there.

The nook was hacked, through a hole in their BB software.
I was sent an email from their system linking me to what claimed to be a .swf file but was actually a .exe file on traff******.biz/dll/
An email was sent out late last night, early this morning warning people from clicking that link.
Consider your email address stolen, and added to a spammer's list, and the password you used comprimised.

Oh my... Didn't they use that "phpbb2" BB or something.. I've heard of back doors into that version, from what I heard, there should be a security fix too - perhaps they just never updated or fixed it. I never really was too fond of that forum interface anyways. I see it used on lots of places.

No shit?! But arent passwords encrypted one-way only? With no decrypting possible, only comparing it with typed in and encrypted password?
As for the spammer's lists, it started already damnit!!!! But it's not too difficult for me to report a spam and that's it...

There is some antispyware from the company E-trust, according to my friend it's good, but from my personal experience any adaware program aint shit. Best course of action is to delete windows and all system files and install it again. No formatting needed ofcourse.

afaik, the text message left on the site was done by somebody who used the same backdoor as the hacker, and closed the hole. probably one of the mods or pseudo-admins
Oh, yeah it is a new message but an hour or 2 before there was a message from the bad guy saying he deleted database and uploaded it to some address, he put a link also... On that site you have to download some client program in order to download the database... bunch of shit..

alas,
i myself prefer the nook to shroomery on most cases, today I just needed mah forum fix, and don't appreciate people calling the nook inferior, whereas we might have less users and information on our archives, I am of the belief that it is a wonderful community, not the fastest chhanging or advancing, but some of us like constancy. So please, I do believe a mistake was made in the nook, which allowed us to be in this situation, but leave critiquing(sp?) to that.
Much appreciated
wery67564
p.s. I have never heard bad talk about the shroomery on the nook, EVER, I guess respect isn't always mutual...
**edited to inform, i know only one person had a negative comment, but i try to keep my philosophy of complete consensus firmly in place, jus like picking on the minority : )

Only one single person in this whole thread that I can see had anything negative to say about the nook...but hey while I have your attention has john from the nook been posting actively? I haven't seen him on Shroomery IRC at all.

Hope they make haste to fix this problem. Good thing I didn't read that email. As for the hackers.... I'll see you in hell bastards. The Nook is my home away from home. Even though I don't post very often here at the Shroomery, I do enjoy clickin around. The forums seem so crowded sometimes. I thank all the people here at the shroomery for having us at a time like this...

I can't believe the Nook was attacked. I consider it an attack on me personally as I spend so much time there. What the fuck would motivate someone to bring it down?
The Nook might not be as huge and dynamic as the shroomery, but the people there are fuckin awesome. I hope all this gets sorted out soon. I'm needin my nook fix.

Hey, you don't know our community inside-out either. We have lots of people here who don't even do psychedelics, or smoke, or drink, or anything. There's a great hodgepodge of different people here, each of them bringing themselves to the table.

I appreciate this outside perspective a lot, for one, it's interesting having you stop by here in the Pub. Different strokes for different folks indeed and yes, the Shroomery does move faaaaaaaast.

Hi, so it looks like the nook is down... can i hang out here for a while? bastid hacker
woah, your emoticons are called smileys.
this place was the first place i stumbled upon when i initially delved into mycology, but you guys weren't accepting new members at the time or something, and then i found the nook and the archives (taught me damn near everything i know) and i've just sorta been there since... but this is a nice place you got here

hey y'all... we're working on gettin it fixed over there! My comp got a pretty bad virus, I'm still workin out the kinks on it. Yucky yucky. I'll try to remember to post back here once everything is worked out, and in the meantime, remain calm and don't click over there.
anywho, I think it's great the OMC can come together in times like these, we've all housed each other at some point or another. And wery... you're a new member over at the Nook so don't be giving us a bad rep over there for bein a little jumpy I know you're upset, we all are, but smoke a bowl and chill. No one meant anything negative towards the Nook.
Myself, I'm gonna sip on some fine French wine and catch up on my old home, the shroomery

Is this another sinister attack by "the man"? The same "man" that took down overgrow.com? I'm STILL smarting from that doozy.

err, the man can't do that...i mean, they literally can't, plus i don't think they would put out a virus that could be tagged back to them, and then warn everyone about it a few days later, i think mailicous more than anything else, remember, there are hardcore christians who hack, and a heathen drug-touting site like thenook would be an ideal target for divine vindication...meh thats just IMO of course

Hey Psilygirl, I didn't even see you post earlier.

yup... still fucked.
the admins are working on it... there is an explanation on the site as to what they believe happened, if you don't want to click on it, it reads:
"We were hacked in a significant fashion by some mean person on 3/26 - 3/27. If you get any emails from thenook.org, do not open them, the attachments have nasty things in them. I think and hope that the exploit has been found, and now we are trying to double check and return things to the way that they were. The hacker is trying to get back in and put popups with java viruses back on this index page, so untill we are more sure about how he got in, when you come back to check here, set your browser to it most secure level. Ill try to keep and eye on this file to be sure it isnt tampered with. I don't know why someone would be so malicious with our fine community."

The comment was directed in terms of the amount of users and new posts. I didn't say anything about the quality of the posting there. I don't even go there, so I wouldn't know. I think you interpreted the post wrong, as I was not trying to knock or degrade anything. The format of the BB here is nicer in my opinion. By format I just mean from a code perspective.

What are the chances of this happening again in the future? Or worse, to other OMC sites? Can you track down "the man" through the virus and take him out, or is he going to be a bully to us?
Man this pisses me off the more I think about it. It's probably just because I feel so helpless. I wish there was something I can do. I mean c'mon, if someone broke into your home and screwed it all up, you would want mess 'em up, right?
If I were to catch this sad sad person, I would personally pull out all of his pubic hairs one by one. After that, the traditional purple nurple of doom, followed by an indian burn from the Gods. Then I would make him wear a school girl's dress so we can have a good laugh instead of worrying about an attack on our home again.....

The nook is the shit! But Shhhh, we don't want that to get out, or we'll have a shroomery invasion when it's back up! Then we'll all have to come back here while ya'll are there, then run home when you figure out where we went. Ahhhh, when will it ever end?
Seriously, the nook is definitely quality, especially when it comes to chemistry. And the pace and size definitely reminds me of this place in it's early days....I can feel like a lazy dork and peruse the boards there, while I feel like a speed freak injecting the forums here. Maybe I just need a new skin though....
Even if it's just mushroom info you want, there is good stuff there that is under the radar of most shroomerites, just as there is at mycotopia. A well rounded shroomer is missing out if they underestimate the power of fads and trends within a specific site. It happens, and things blossom at one site that are dismissed at another.....

We've had to deal with hackers here in the past. One of them exploited a hole in our BB software and used it to delete posts. Another exploited a hole in phpAds and briefly used our server to send spam. We have some experience now locking things down by IP and whatnot, so if there's any way I can help the Nook admins get things back on track please let me know!
Peace,

Thanks to the community here for being gracious enough to allow us to share your irc server for the time being until we can get The Nook fully operational again.
I am not affiliated with the staff at The Nook but I consider them to be friends. The site was hacked essentially because our staff is very busy with their own lives. Most of us have jobs or are full-time students and security was probably lacking. I can't fill you in on the exact details because I am not on the staff.
As far as my presence here goes, I recently went through a bout of joblessness, followed by near bankruptcy and some personal problems. I can no longer participate during business hours, but I will try to start participating in the message boards again in the evenings and on weekends.
