Fresh Coconut Substrate

I read Roger Rabbit say something about using fresh cocunuts instead of coco coir if he could. I have a few coconut tree's in my house, can i make a substrate out of them to mix with my Hpoo? Would it even be worth the trouble? What might be the benefits of using fresh coconut rather than coco coir? How would one even go about preparing it?
If it works maybe I can add some of this to Agars home made compost recipe which im planning to make soon.

You'd want to rinse the coconuts well if you live in an enviroment like the beach were salts are in the air. Let them dry well and use the husks of the nut in place of store bought coir. With the nut inside, you could use it for composting definately. You'd want to shred it down for easier composting and add it to carbon materials like coco husks, dry leaves, straw, exc. You'll have to figure out a prime mixture for yourself.

Here is one of the Coconut tree's. just took the picture. Im about to pull them out soon to drink me some coconut water.

Hahaha @ figuring out a priime mixture for myself. I've only been in this hobby for 4 months, im just now working on creating my own compost, I really doubt I'd have the skills essential to create my own prime mixture.
How about some help from the experienced..? What should I do with the coconuts? Also, are their any benefits to using these fresh coconuts? I dont want to waste my time if it makes no difference to coco coir.

Oh man. Do I ever wish I was back at the beach! lol! Coco coir is a great substrate IMO. My father in Florida has quite a few of them on his property too. He uses the Coco Palms for carving Tiki's as well. So, every property that was being cleared for developement, he would snag the downed trees and coconuts to use. Trees for him, coconuts for me. Using the husk from the nut was my first bulk material ever used. A friend of my fathers that's a professional grower from Pennsylvania gave me some hands on experience with this material in the late 90's. Haven't looked back since. The mycelium rips through it and the material doesn't even need to be pasteurized. Good luck.

Okay so once I do get those coconuts, and rip the bulk off the nut , how exactly does one get it ready to grow mushrooms from?
Can you give me some step by step procedures? Doesnt have to be too detailed just enough for me to understand the steps and be able to do this on my own.

Wait for the nuts to fall from the tree, rather than climbing and picking. They are ready for eating and mushroom food then. Take a hatchet and split the nut in 2. Eat the nut inside with a tablespoon with your family or friends (fantastic appetizer or snack) and after the nut is scooped out from eating, rinse the husk inside and out well to make sure you've got the salts and the excess nut out of the inside of the husks. Chop the husks up into shreds with a hatchet or an ax and allow them to dry well in the sun for a day. If you have a heavy duty chipper, that will be great for shredding the husks. Then simply hydrate to 2 drip capacity and spawn. Very simple.

It's very simple. Don't think i'm discouraging you from a quick pasteurization either. This step certainly doesn't hurt but, with plain coco coir i've never done it and had nearly perfect success. Good luck.

Im def pasteurizing. Im a sterile freak. Im actualy ordering some ten lbs of Hpoo to mix with the coconut. Expecting a nice bulk grow from it.
