Buying my first set of turntables...help me!

Hello friends. Been thinking about getting some table for quite some time and I think I'm ready to make the purchase. I want to make sure I get tables that will last me a while and perform very well. I plan to do a fair share of mixing and scratching. I was thinking about getting some Technics 1200s. What do you guys think of them? performance, durability, etc.? I don't want to have to upgrade any time soon, so I am willing to spend a decent penny, but also don't wanna go broke if you catch my drift. Also if I went with the 1200s, is it necessary to buy new, or will used be ok?
Suggestions for a mixer would also be much appreciated. Thanks guys!

Yup, can't go wrong with 1200s.
Used... it really depends on the individual deck. I started out little over 2.5 years ago, and I got an old beat up 1200 and a brand new Stanton STR8-90. Man, do I wish I'd just bought 2 1200s.
The 1200 had some tracking issues, and I've gotta replace the cable in it now, but apart from a quick $20 tuneup it's been completely solid.
The Technics is much harder to manipulate, the pitch tends to float a bit, but it does have some interesting bells n whistles.
Another bonus of getting 1200s is if you wind up makin a thing out of being a DJ, wherever you play you're most likely going to have to spin on a pair of 1200s.
That being said, I know there are some fantastic new decks out there, but I don't know which ones they are or anything about em.
Just my 2 cents.

Technics are the way to go
Infact I just ordered a 1200 MK5 which should be here this week. It doesnt matter if its used or new, but just make sure you can trust the previous owner.
You can supposedly get some new MKII's for $375 + Shipping from:
http://www.hollywooddj.com/technics.html
As for your mixer. Check this out it should help you narrow it down.

1200's are the best there is in my opinion. the denons are very nice too though. you should be able to find a good set of used 1200's for around $400.
i would reccomend going with a pair of m3d's or mk5's.
be shure(<--lol, out of habbit i guess) that you wanna go with vinyl. i used to think that i was always gonna spin vinyl but recently i sold my 1200's and bought some cdj's.
vinyl can get very expensive, especially if you wanna keep up with all the new records constantly coming out. i dont have that kinda cash right now so im strictly digital now, also cds are just easier to deal with. some tracks dont even make it to vinyl and you will often see djs with turntables and cd decks. there are even artist who refuse to release tracks on vinyl.
well, if i had a bit more money i might have stayed with my many crates of "wax" but this is the best solution to my problem at the moment.
as far as mixers go, the pioneer djm-600 is a solid choice, but you may need something with a little more room if you plan on doing alot of scratching. pioneer, about a year ago released a scratch mixer, the djm-909 and its supposed to be pretty nice.
hope this helps.

You should of saved your previous set up and stuck with vinyl. You could of always tried out Serato Scratch live or Final scratch and combined Digital with analog. But ya vinyl is more expensive in the long run. But theres just something about that analog feel to it that I will never get tired of.
But I wouldnt really suggest the Pioneer Djm-600 for scratching. The Djm-600 is geared more towards mixing. Plus were not even sure what exactly his budget for a mixer is gonna be. If your gonna go all out with the money for a mixer, you might as well go for the Rane Empath.

did you just stop reading after "djm-600"? i stated an issue with scratching there. you can get a used 600 for a decent price though.
actually i would say start out with a cheapo crappy used mixer to learn to scratch. no use in tearing up a mixer you spent big bucks on. be prepared to buy an extra crossfader or two also.

never go wrong with technics. i got a pair on ebay a few years ago, they had cobwebs inside of them (probably hadnt been used since the 70s) but i cleaned em up, turned em on, and havent had any problems since.
they are built like tanks.

mk2's are the way to go. i've had mine for 9 years, not 1 problem. a boy of mine got the mk5's last year and he's already started having problems with one deck. google mk2 vs mk5, theres a whole mess of reasons why to just go ahead and save that extra 200$. i've spun on 'em all, and nothing feels quite as right as the mk2. as for a mixer, if you are serious and dont mind dropping a few extra $$ for superior sound quality, go with an Allen & Heath or a Rane.
word.

btw, i have to throw in my 2 cents here.. for a mixer, i LOVE my gemini slim 60 (pmx60) but I will end up getting a Kaos Pad, because its just that sick, especially for complicated scratch patterns.. doing a crab or hamster style is as easy as tapping your fingers on a pad.

Thanks for all the quick responses! It seems that the general concensus is that Technics are a good choice. I think I will take the advice to buy an average used mixer to get into scratching, and then spend the $$ for a quality piece of equipment once I get the hang of it. That will give me some time to put the money away for a top notch mixer as well. Anyways, keep the suggestions coming!

I wouldn't buy turntables. I was thinking of buying tables a couple years ago and I'm glad I didn't because I would probably have them sitting around and trying to sell them. All you need is Ableton live, midi controller, and laptop.

tech 1200 mkII's will serve you plenty well. They don't depreciate much at ALL if you keep them in good shapre. I've bought and sold pairs three times on ebay. Do what I do and watch about 15 bids ending soon for them and sniper at the last minute. You can actually get them for around 200 before shipping if you're lucky. I've always gotten around 300 a piece for them when selling.

As for a mixer.. get the crappy 70 dollar purple NUMARK DM2002 or is it DMX2002.. whatever. It's cheap... it'll last about a year before the faders start to break, but you can replace them easy for 20 bucks. It's great to learn and has everything you need. Transformer buttons, LOW/MID/HI kill switches...
TRUST ME: It's better to learn on this piece of junk than to spend 400 on something you find you won't even need. Learn the basics from this machine and then decide what you want in your next mixer. It'll honestly serve you well for at least a year, but after that... if you want to play in a club, you WILL need something better.
