Just wondering if anyone has ever done this , recently seen it mentioned in a guide for an alterante teq. for sterelizing. I dont have a pressure cooker or a steamer I do have a crockpot and a pot ofcoarse. plan on buying a pressure cooker someday when I have the extra cash for itbut what method do you think I should use in the meantime and if anyone has ever used a crockpot please let me know how it works.

haha, not a bad idea, just let it cook all day. I don't see why it wouldn't sterilize grains if you got temps to 150+ and kept them there long enough.

i think 150 is too low for sterilization. isnt pasteurization at 180?

Even if the crockpot got to 1000 degrees it still wouldn't really be useful to sterilize substrates. Why? Because the water inside the grain will boil at about 212 degrees (at normal atmospheric pressure).
Problem is you need to get the substrate to about 250 degrees WITHOUT boiling off the water and drying the substrate out.
The solution is a PRESSURE COOKER. When water is under pressure the boiling temp goes up. This allows it to get up to about the 250 degrees needed for sterilization.
This is why there is no replacement for a pressure cooker to properly sterilize grains. If you think of one that is feasible let me know.

Ok sorry. I understand now. I thought you were looking for a PC alternative.
Ok with BRF you can sterilize it by just steaming. The reason I have heard is because it's made for human consumption and is therefore WAY cleaner then say WBS..which is dirty stuff.
If the crockpot gets hot enough I don't see any reason why it wont boil water.
Do you not have a large pot and a stove?

Well that's all you need.
strait from the MMGG Place the jars in a large kitchen pot and add water so that water comes half way up the side of the jars. Bring the water to a slow boil and place the lid on the pot. From the time the water starts to boil, the jars need 1 hour to be sterilized. Water should not be bubbling and splashing all over the place. The jars should not be floating around in the water. The substrate in the culture jars has the right amount of water in it already. You do not want water leaking into the jars and changing the ratio. The jars should not sit flat on the bottom of the pan. Too much heat can transfer directly to the jars and cause a loss of moisture. You can place a wash cloth inside the pan and set the jars directly on the wash cloth to help prevent too much heat from transferring to the jars.
I might even boil 1 1/2 hours to be safe.

You can't heat the WATER INSIDE THE JARS past 212 without having it under pressure. The deep fryer would just dry out the jars if anything.
