Levels of Conciousness defined.

I'm aware that there are a number of different levels of conciousness, but I was wondering if there is a defined number of levels, and if each of these levels is defined individually. Basically, I want to know the differences between each level of conciousness, if you catch my drift....

Since about age 8 or so I have been wondering the same things and have been experimenting since . One experiment was to say things in my mind at different levels - ie. one can speak to oneself in words that one can clearly "hear" in order to get ready to say something yet one can think of a sentence without forming the sounds of words in ones head - both are to me seemingly at different levels and there are many more .So I tried to ascertain how many different levels of inner speech there were available to me . I dont know if I explained that properly - did anyone follow that ?

It sounds like the exact same thing Iv'e noticed since I was 6 or 8. I don't know how many levels there are, because it's hard to keep concentrating, and easy to float back up to the usual level.

Well, let's see if this sheds some light on the subject for you folks. Timothy Leary came up with a model of consciousness, specifically the brain, that is divided into 8 circuits. Rather than type it all myself i'll provide links... i have a feeling this is exactly what you guys are looking for. the first is one is text and is a must read. http://www.deoxy.org/8circuit.htm this one is broken down with tables and star trek references http://www.deoxy.org/cirtable.htm

I'm aware of that model, but that's not quite what I'm thinking of.Or perhaps it is, long since I last read those texts. I think that theory deals more with consciousness in general than the specific mental levels I'm talking about.

Here are a few from experience (I think): 1) normal awake 2) sleeping 3) dreaming - is this different than sleeping 4) hypnosis 5) meditation - empty (zen) 6) meditation - focus (kaballah) 7) elf world (from elf spice/DMT) Is this what you mean, or something else?

according to my friend BBin, onacid, or robin, there are three levels of consciousness, one- awareness of life two-awareness of self three-awareness of collective self levels one and three are equal to each other, the collective self is at level one awareness once 'we' reach level three, right now humans are for the most part at level two, some a bit 'above' and some a bit 'below' this pattern repeats itself infinitely most likely in a fractal pattern mimicking the patterns of physical reality manifested in atoms and solar systems, we both believe the here and then there was and is nothing, that then 'divided' through perception creating perception in observer/observed, that is metaphysical/physical, this 'division' is a result of the completion of the endless itteration of the "division" that is to say not at the beginning 'it' divided, it then continued until it reached such a state of complexity that it became one again causing it to divide again+on+on+on dig?

It is commonly believed that there are seven "astral levels". I am guessing that this is what you are asking instead of just brain states. Thes are in order from lowest to highest 1. Physical 2. Astral 3. Mental 4.Budhic 5. Atmic 6.Anupadaka 7.Adi For more specific info on charachteristics, start at http://www.v-j-enterprises.com/rbruce2.html [/url]

I don't think anyone can definatively state the number due to the states blending into each other without any sharplinebetweenthem. This is, of course, very unsatisfying, but accurate from what I can see. Where does one rainbow color stop and another begin? Try changing the color scheme on your computer in display properties sometime. Same idea. Having said that, the number is SEVEN I tell you. -Jellric I'm aware that there are a number of different levels of consciousness, but I was wondering if there is a defined number of levels, and if each of these levels is defined individually. I like this discussion, I have thought about lots of this stuff before. I see conciousness as levels within levels of states of minds, within states of minds, e.t.c. I mean that for example we can be in an state of happiness. That happiness can be amplified to different degrees. This slightly changes conciousness. So there would be too levels too define clearly. I do find it interesting to analyze the spiritual ones though. Red: Thanks for the link

If I'm correct Gurdjieff (www.gurdjieff.org) made a system of consious levels and associated these with the universe and beyond. I cant find it on the site though. What I remember are these levels. Earth, Moon and Planets are the normal levels most people live in. Then comes the level of enlightment, the sun. Then the galexies, than the level of the 3 creational forces, then the all, and than it goes beyond my understanding.9,,
