thin pachanoi growth
    #5444374 - 03/26/06 03:39 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

i've always had a problem with my san pedro's growing rather thin. i've looked around but i can't find a definitive answer regarding the cause. i suspect it's lack of light. they're in a west facing window all winter and then go out in full sun in the warmer months.

what is the problem, and how do i fix it?

mine grows thin too...

I have east facing windows, so the light is far from ideal. I don't know how that would make it grow thin.

How about fertilizer or something? Mine never gets nutrients or anything, rarely gets water. I'm sure the general conditions make a big difference.

I'll post a picture.

my thin growth happened in the winter. There wasn't any growth at all until the winter. It was a cutting, took over a year to do anything. The new thin part has all been in the last 4-5 months.

you need to find a colder, dryer place for them during winter. It's important that cacti have a dormancy period with no grwoth at all otherwise they will become stressed and will not grow to full potential the next summer.

Trichocereus don't need any light at all during winter*, a heated room with a little bit of water and a bit of light is enough for them to grow pale and thin. This is no good. I don't recommend wintering them under lights because they provide heat and it will try to grow. A cold dry basement can be used. I can't give you specific temperatures but with growth like that you have to find a new place to put them during winter.

*most other cacti need some light during winter

i was in the office of one of my professors today (i'm a horticulture major) and i noticed he had a couple of san pedros on the window sill that were growing pretty thin too. we talked about it a little bit. it's definitely low light, and it's wise to move a san pedro someplace cool to induce dormancy during the colder months, less it grow all thin and weak. he just got back from ecuador and said he saw ones six inches wide down there.
