wbs problems

It seems that bird seed isnt working out for me so far im using a western family brand which could be the problem but i cant get around that bad milk, rotten apple smell and it always seems to go wrong. I soak for 12-24 hours (I've tried both) and ive simmered and rinsed then boiled in a jar in water for about 1 and a half hours. I use tyvek filters over the lid unfortunatly i dont have the funds to afford a pressure cooker. Ive tried it more than enough times with different moisture contents. btw i have completed pf tek and i work with an average amount of sterility. Any other helpful hints would be great.

you need a pc to do WBS/Rye consistently.
But you can look in fractal sterilizing....then you dont need to pc.

Hey krong, here is what you wanna do:
1) get a PC, look on ebay
2) Soak your WBS for about 12-24 hours, skip the smimmering part, not needed. Let the WBS strain in a collander for a while, like 30minutes or something then load it into jar and PC for 90 minutes. Only fill the jars 3/4, cuz after they get out of the PC you need to shake them. I know this will work for you, give it another, try. C'ya

You must also remember not to take the jars out until the pressure cooker has cooled to room temperature. Large sudden shifts in pressure and temperature has also proved problematic for a lot of people.

Yeah, all the above is great advice. I've found that when simmering wbs that has been soaked, too many of the seeds will break open leading to contamination 90% of the time. Not soaking means that bacterial endospores don't germinate, so are not killed in the PC. Again, this leads to contamination. I soak my seed overnight, drain and rinse. Then it goes straight into the jars to be PC'd. I also add a little vermiculite to maintain moisture levels, as i find wbs tends to err on the dry side with this method.

I've always taken mine out of the PC once its depressurized and I've never had a problem. I think its actually preferred because many people leave there lids on loose (so that nutrients don't get expelled through filter material) and then tighten them once they open up the PC. It would also take about 2 hours compared with 8 if you left them in the PC to cool.

My pressure cooker bit the dust, so this time round I fractal sterilized 24 jars of WBS, I shall let you know in a day or two if they smell like ass lol.

alright seems like a pressure cooker is a must, ive tried fractional sterilization it doesnt work well with bird seed since the center never gets hot enough without a bunch of grains bursting. thanks for the tips everyone

just thinking, isnt it fractional sterilization? since you split up the sterilization times. [not trying to be mean]

This is the only choice for me. I do large batches of jars and letting them sit in the PC would be way too time comsuming. I actualy place a turbo fan next to my PC, when 1 hour passes i change it to a cold stove top and blast the fan on high right over it. I get my PC to depressurize in 5 minutes tops, and then remove the jars right away. Havnt had any contams this way. Aways get 100% colonizations.
