I am about to go buy stuff to set up a terrarium...
What would you people and super human being suggest I get? size of aquarium? what do I need to make a good working terrarium, by that I mean, easy to keep temps and humidity up, without getting cakes soaked? What should I use for a lid?
ALL suggestions are welcome:)
Any suggestions on a cool mist humidifier (brand names) one thats easy to use and has multi settings...or just cheap and works:)

Just get something as large as will fit in to the space you have available, a plastic storage container should be fine as a containter about a ft or more high.
Ultrasonic humidifier, best way to moisten the air.
Heat mat, if its cold where you are its perfect to keep the terrarium warm, place under the container, available from garden stores.

You should use perlite for humidification : cheaper and easier for a first time (I started with an humidifier and then turned to perlite. And I definitely prefer perlite.) Use some plexiglass for your lid. Buy a terrarium as big as possible, you'll be happy later. If you can do so, buy sterile gloves. It's precious when you want to manipulate something.

- Rubbing Alcohol
- Hydrogren Peroxide
- Paper Towels
- Lysol
- (2) Plastic Rubbermaids
- Perlite
- Aquarium Heater (50 or 100 watt)
- Jar to put the heater in
- Mason Jars
- Vermiculite
- Brown Rice
- Latex Gloves
- Spore Syringes
- Water
- Duct Tape (Never know when you'll need it)
If you want to use a humidifier, you can get a Duracraft cool mist at CVS for $20, just seal the original hole and drill a 5/8" hole and insert a garden hose in it and into your terrarium.
That's everything you'll need to get started.

Is there a size/grain of vermiculite or perlite my friend needs?
And she can get them both at a garden store?

on the verm, you should be good on 5-10 lbs, 10 to save trips, on the perilite? i dont know, never used it, from what i hear its messy and sometimes contams. and on the verm, the finest size available is what youre shooting for.

if you do go with the whole ultra sonic thing, my fiend says you should also get:
3 X 2liter bottle
6ft X Vynil Tubing (7/16 - 1/2)
Cardboard or Wood (to make a stand for your bottles)
Anything you need to make your choice of lids (if you go with aquarium Vs. Rubbermaid)
also if you go with the aqauarium, black poster board to cover the sides with
1 X light
you may need a timer for your light/humidifier

Actually I think the best size vermiculite would be a medium consistency... not powder but not big chunks.. somewhere in between. A powdery vermiculite will compact in the jars leaving less space and making it harder for the mycelium to colonize. Larger vermiculite sizes have plenty of air space so thats the way to go. This is also true for casings.
