casing with perlite

I have a 50 gallon rubbermaid container in case I want to grow more. Casing does not need as much humidity due to the moisture provided in the casing itself. OK i get that. It does dry out after the first or second flush, though...right? If I were to stick a casing in a rubbermaid would perlite soak the poor the thing? I do have an extra coolmist lying around...would this be better...and with a normal fan placed next to a hepa filter to air out the chamber?

there was a tek about using wax paper over the top of your bed, and replacing it every third day i believe. this works well to keep in humidity also/ instead of using a casing layer. ...oh, and vermiculite would be a hell of alot better for a casing. or even better yet would be a 50/50 verm to coir casing.

perlite doesnt hold water for very long it is too porous.. that is why people use vermeculite.. it retains water for a long time..

I don't think he's referring to using perlite as casing, he's simply just asking if putting a casing in a rubbermaid with perlite in it will soak the thing too much. I think that is what he is asking.
 Peace.

There have been a couple questions in the pastfew days asking about this. I wonder where people are getting this idea. Maybe they're confusing perlite with vermiculite?

Sorry for being unclear. Would it be wise to coat the bottom of the rubbermaid with soaked perlite and then place the casings on top?

directly on top, no. but in another container placed on top, not necessary. personally i don't use perlite for anything but cakes.

doing so will keep the humidty up, but you'll want to keep the casings from resting directly on the perlite (you said you were going to soak it, do you want to soak your casings with it?)

Well I won't soak the perlite. I'll pour water until it hits the halfway point. I don't know what it means to soak a casing...ugghhhh...another tek to read. I've seen some pics of shrooms growin out of casing slopped directly on the perlite. Most likely I would put my casing in a tupperware container. Hmm..should I poke a couple holes into the bottoms of the containers and rest them on an elevated grill/rack. Would this allow humidity from the perlite to saturate into the bottom side of the casing, as well as the top?

Try a Poor Mans Pod. It will work with perlite and does fine with casings.

And be sure to have the casings in smaller containers, not directly on the perlite like so:

Definately listen to this... I've seen a few people place cakes dirtectly unto the perlite and then wonder why they kept getting contams. It's not that perlite is dirty but "too much" wet moisture creates a perfect enviroment for contams, and placing the caking directly unto the perlitre allows for that exactly.
Good Luck.
