This is the description of this type of contamination says:
"Lipstick Mold ? Sporendonema purpurescens (Geotrichum candidium)
This fungus colonizes compost or casing. As spores mature, the color of the mold changes from white to pink, to cherry red, and finally to dull orange. It is slow growing. Spores spread in air, during watering, and on pickers. The lipstick mold utilizes certain fats in the compost. It is an uncommon problem. Control is centered around sanitation."
It says in only colonizes compost or casing. I just wanted to note that I just got this contamination in one of my WBS jars which were incubating. It was definately lipstick mold, very very noticable lipstick red color.

Do you have wooden (more so, cheap) cabinets in the area you work in? I found, and every so often still, find an orangish/red mold that I used to have issues with underneath the exterior of the cabinets.

i would like to add my newly aquired knolodge to this unfortunate mold.
lip stick mold made it way into al 4 of my 400ml h2o karo LC's
i noticed just a few mycelem puffs turn pink, and it spread to the water, i knocked up some WBS & Rye jars with it and it turned pink. I had these housed in a shitty all wooden closet, not to mention its your typical college party house so sanitation was done at its best...which is still nasty.
so im trying a glove box next time.

Geotrichum is common in spawn jars if they were not inoculated in complete sterility. It isn't restricted to compost or casing. In fact, I've NEVER seen lipstick mold on a casing layer. RR
