Does anybody see a reason why they could not put the power supply under oil? I don't.

I don't either. But the power supply generates a lot of heat, perhaps they didn't want the extra heat output into the oil that was being used to cool the other components. Power supplies are pretty good at staying cool on their own.

That's a good point - even after draining the PC of oil to perform an upgrade, expansion slots would still be coated in a thin layer of non-conductive oil. I imagine putting in a new ram stick would fuck-up, based on the fact that the oil would be trapped between the new stick and the mainboard.

I dunno how you'd clean the oil off in a situation like that.

A solvent like rubbing alcohol should clean off the oil without damaging the board. If you were just changing/adding hardware you could get away with just cleaning the slot with alcohol.

But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

:geordinod:

I used to clean my Sega Genesis cartridges with rubbing alcohol. Worked wonders for when there was stuff blocking the electrical flow.

And oils are soluble in rubbing alcohol, so that would work on them too.
