F.A.G.S. Ideas
    #5440164 - 03/25/06 01:14 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Well admins, this may be a bit of a task, but do you think along with our general, and trade ratings, we could have a FAGS rating based on others opinions of our recipes?

Or would it be possible to have, similar to OTD's ban pool, a random drawing of people to post recipes.

Lets say we set it to a maximum of once every 6 weeks.. so that if you win you cant be selected again for the next 6 weeks. Also, if the FAGS numbers start to rise we could select more then one member per week...

Is that possible coding wise? Could we perhaps enforce one or two mods (myself please?) to start threads and have those who win post in them along with reviews of said recipes in the same thread?

Just some ideas... let me know what you guys think.

Almost anything is possible coding wise, but we only have a limited supply of coders familiar with our database and associated software, and therefore there is the need to prioritize technical requests.

I don't think there is nearly enough interest in this tiny little corner of the board to implement a full blown rating system (at least not yet!).  I mean the Shroomery has some 200-300 registered users online at any given time, over 40,000 registered members, and what.. some 12 f.a.g.s members (only one of whom actually cooked and responded to the first week's recipe by daimyo)?

In keeping with my reluctance to harass our coding team for such a menial feature when there is already a list of features waiting to be implemented which would serve a considerably larger amount of people on the site; the random drawing of people would seem to be odd at a time when there is only a handful of people involved in the first place.  Even so, the random drawing idea seems more feasible since users would have to opt-in, but with only 12 people.. it just doesn't seem worth it to me.  Remember that we still have an entirely public culinary arts parent forum to populate as well - so if you have a hankerin' to post a random recipe, you should just do it there as we always have!

Isn't that exactly what this forum's purpose is to begin with?  We have the main sticky introducing the project, including therein a list of all participating f.a.g.s., with links to each of their recipes as they are posted.  Within each individual recipe thread, there would reside all the reviews.  I don't see how we could objectively choose a 'winner' until we implement some sort of ratings system - but that is still very subjective since we won't consistently have all f.a.g.s. participating in any given week's recipe.

Therefore instead of tallying up an arbitrary number and figuring an average to declare a "winner" - I believe we should just let people verbalize their impressions on the dish as openly and freely as possible, letting readers come to their own conclusion.  Afterall, each palette is different, as is every recipe - so without an official taste test of the same exact dish, I don't see a hardline rating all that valuable.

However, (and perhaps this is what you meant to begin with), I wouldn't mind conducting a poll after one full "rotation" through all f.a.g.s members, allowing each member to choose their personally favorite recipe, after having personally tasted all or most of them.  Of course, this will only happen once every 3-4 months, so it's not really something that needs to be overly moderated.

Lastly, only f.a.g.s. members are allowed to create threads in this subforum - so ideally the forum will be providing direct access and clear listing of all recipes to begin with.

i meant whoever wins the random draw would be the one to cook their recipe that week, but thanks for the other stuff! and let me know what u think of the random draw.

I guess I just don't see a purpose for the random draw, since all members are able to showcase their recipe anyway, and they can post it any time they want - even if the bulk of reviews would come later down the line. I'm just weary of making this too complicated, in the event that it doesn't take off and we remove it, since that will be a lot of time down the drain. Not to mention, it's nice to have a little heads up as to when your recipe is due -- since depending on your recipe, the extra time could be necessary for proper planning, sourcing ingredients, and creating the highly desired photo journal that will hopefully accompany most dishes. Quite a few of the participants thus far aren't high traffic posters as it is, so they may not be able to so easily jump at the random to submit their recipe. Let's just see if momentum picks up as is, before trying to make the Shroomery the Foodery.
