black mold
    #543360 - 02/07/02 05:55 AM (22 years, 1 month ago)

A friend of mine is having alot of trouble with some black mold, it doesnt look similar to the "black pin" mold, it looks exactly like the mycelllium but is a dark black color and usually grows at the edge of a colonized patch inside the jar. if you have any information or experience with this he would very much appreciate it. he has had to throw out 3 jars so far, it seems they like to attack the jars that are most colonized (50-60%) he is using an incubator at around 83 degrees to make his jar temps about 86 inside. thanks again. He is using BRF and verm. as a substrate.

also.... he knows the rule is beeter safe than sorry but he has not had a jar finish yet without coming down with this, if the mycellium grows over it, can he keep it? pleeeease? heh

well, he decided that he was too impatient to figure it out so he decided to cut it open and see what was up, if it was small and didnt run that deep he was gonna cut it out. once he broke it open there was a GIANT area of black mold running all through the cake, and for an added bonus, some green mold on the bottom.....damn. have camera and will try to take pics without getting sick......guess its time to look into getting a glove box.....and a pressure cooker

reexamine all parts of the procedure that may introduce contams into your jars. PC is probably a good idea.

you can make a glove box out of a cardboard box with saranwarp on the top, and arm holes in the front... just spray it down with anti-bacterial kitchen or bathroom cleaner 10 minutes before use.. or less..

is a glove box worth the time and effort? my friend has already spent......alot on building a very nice terrarium (pics will be in the cultivation forum in a couple days) but i guess if he cant get any good jars, then whats the point of the nice terrarium :-) also..... any suggestions on CPU fans? i went to radio shack today to help him look and they were like 18-20$ for a decent 120V fan. thanks

dude.. a cardboard box with two holes in the front and plastic wrap across the top should cost about $1... it's the bomb when it comes to being sterile tho... IMHO..

Just call it "a disposable glove box" and toss it when you are done. If you are on a regular schedule, you only really need a glove box every couple of months. By the time you need it again, you will have had time to make something nice, or you can make another quick disposable box cheap.
