Zone 5 Ethno garden discussion

Hello all, I had a thought that since spring is apon us we should have a discussion about outdoor gardens in our climate zone. I will start by posting a series of questions, and hopefully all who read this can contribute something from there past experiences.
1. What Ethnos do you grow outdoors? 2. Which ones all year long? (no indoor winters) 3. What precautions do you take in the winter, if any? 4. What plants do you allow, or have luck with, reseading on their own? 5. Do you start seed indoors, and when? 6. When do you transplant outdoors? 7. Do you have issues with damping-off of seedlings, and how do you control it? 8. What types of fertilizers do you use on which plants? 9. What types of pest control do you use? 10. When do you harvest? 11. How do you arrange you garden?
Any other tid-bits of information that you think may help someone please respond. I hope you all have a great spring. Laters.....

I'm in 4b - 5a and never really considered an outdoor garden as a possibility. I've considered Desmanthus Illinoensis because I hear it can tolerate this climate but I've yet to try anything.
When I try to come up with a few other viable options, I find myself short on ideas =\

A lot of annuals (poppy,MG,datura) can be grown outdoors during summer in almost any area. I wonder as well what others besides Desmanthus would grow year after year, reseading itself.
