so i tried to go to xp recently, but have yet again come to the conclusion that xp is teh suck... maybe someone can explain this one... i installed windows last week and havent really used this computer much because of frequent shut downs and now i cant do some tasks suchs as open winamp or windows media player because "insufficient quota to complete the required service"

There's something wrong with your system. I also used to say 2000 is better but its not really that noticiable if at all, you just have to know how to keep your comp clean of shit...

I really don't see any use for using 2000 for anything other than a server, and even then, fuck it. Use 2003.

I just looked at my task manager and that process doesn't show even one instance. You have some kind of malicious software running. XP is 2000, btw. Just a fancier GUI. Not much difference at all other than that and much easier networking configuration.

:heart: Windows XP.

Wrong.

XP = NT 5.1

2000 = NT 5.0

ntvdm.exe - Here is the scoop on NT DOS Virtual Machine as it pertains to computer network security. The big question: what is ntvdm.exe and is it spyware, a trojan and if so, how do I get rid of NT DOS Virtual Machine?

The ntvdm.exe process is used when you run DOS or 16-Bit software on your windows pc. It will emulate the old DOS/16-bit os to allow older programs to run. If you are running DOS based (or 16-bit) programs on your computer, you should leave this process running.

ntvdm.exe is flagged as a system process and does not appear to be a security risk. However, removing NT DOS Virtual Machine may adversly impact your system.

The Spy Bot database currently registers ntvdm.exe to Microsoft.

This is part of Microsoft Windows (NT).

----------------

ntvdm.exe is related to cmd.exe, wing.dll, wing32.dll, wjview.exe, awlhut32.dll, d3d8.dll, wow32.dll, wowexec.exe.

"Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a main era - -the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run, but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant."

Still NT 5.x, silly goose.

They couldn't possibly hve the same version # exactly, or they'd be exactly the same OS altogether. :tongue:

Did you get SP2 installed on top of XP? Without SP2, then I agree, XP is much worse than 2000... unless you don't mind crashing and a wide open system. However, with SP2, XP is as stable as 2000 and the extra features (mainly registry recovery) make it worth the upgrade... that being said, free Unix is a much better solution for me... depends upon what you are doing, though.

I prefer 2000 for installing on people's computers that I fix. It's simpler, stabler and doesn't need to be activated  :naughty:

However, I still prefer XP myself. There are lots of commands and functionalities that I tend to forget about until I'm on a 2000 system and try to use them, and they're not there.

it's the dell oem version of pro, with sp2... but they still wanted it activated... so i went througha process and got it done... granted it might not have been the way mr gates planed, but it did do it...

and linux, well, i tried it a little, but it was a bit too much work than what i wanted to invest... i eventualy stopped booting into it, then ended up formating the drive...

the way I see it is, linux is alot of work at first to get going, but then you're set and maintaince is quite low afterwards. on the other hand, windows is easy to install and setup at first, but a lifetime of maintaince afterwards.
