1 of my cakes looks kind of dry, if i boiled water and injected some would it do anything negative?

When ever you cut/stab mycelium it creates a "wound" like as if you got cut or stabbed. This wound could get "infected" with a contam and your cake could die of "gangrene" the green gang. You just have to be sterile.... although I have been awfully mean to a few fully colonized cakes in my past and they have never got contamed
Just dunk the cake underwater. It will absorb the water. Ziplock bags full of water work well.

Like I said, I never had a problem with a cake contaminating but I have HEARD that when they are cut or "wounded" that area is left open to contamination. Only risk I could see. Seemed like good info to pass along.
And your saying that you have done it for years and not had contams so that goes to show even farther that fully colonized cakes are VERY contam resistant.
Some more good info for my noodle.

That and let the water cool down first.
 Peace.
